Go to this link and you will find more about Ubuntu.

    You can
download Ubuntu, or request a free CD from Canonical.
Since you are new, you may find you like Linux Mint Better. It is based on Ubuntu but has some software added like Java support.

    Download Linux Mint Here

    :cool

I would suggest ubuntu client, and remember that it is not windows.. the "DOS" like command shell called bash is where you can download and install apps alot easier by a simpe "sudo apt-get install whatever" program, go to ubuntu site and they have forums and user manuals and also a irc chatroom for real time help. They also have a firefox plugin called "Ubuntu-It" which helps, it works nicely with dual boot on windows i have done it many times.

At boot it will ask you which OS you want to boot

New ubuntu/xp user. Install went clean. Started with a single windows partition and during install ubuntu ask you to resize the Windows partition to make room for an extra "ubuntu" partition. two parts are needed, EXT3 and Swap partitions. Swap is twice the size of your memory. A boot time manager "Grubs" is done automatically for you. When you reboot you will see a choice for xp or ubuntu. Pretty straightforward. Ubuntu did a lot of updates on first reboot. Only prob so far is my email clients dont seem to want to work with gmail imap email service, probably something i haven't set or installed yet. These forums are really cool.

I did the same thing a while back: they actually have a crew here in SanDiego, Kplug, that meets twice a month just to help people load linux, and they helped me when my old Dell laptop didn't wanna do it...

But after that, the unbutu forums have been so helpful, and yeah, I've spend many late nights trying to get my wireless usb card to work on linux, and downloading mouse and keyboard apps, so my mouse wheel doesn't spin out of control...but that's part of the fun of learning command lines and all, I started out a long time ago on UNIX mainframe workstation, using vi and nroff to write papers, all that...but this was before linux was invented, and I never learned all that much...

I also figured out on the forums how to make a bootable linux usb flash drive, and to boot from that, which is a lot handier than downloading mirror image to dvd...and easier to lug around everywhere...
