Hey, I'm tring to fix a friends computer who still uses dialup but hes having problems with the information in the dialup connection changing itself. Hes using windows ME and connextant 56k soft modem. I've ran avg and adaware removed some spyware but found no viruses. I've uninstalled and reinstalled communications and I've uninstalled and reinstalled the modem and deleted the init strings. I've tried recreating the connection several times and usualy it will work for about 4 or 5 times before changing back. Usualy the phone number changes, to about 20 digits long. If you keep trying it by retyping the number and connecting it will connect fine but when you disconnect not only will the number change but, the username will have an ip address added to the end of it and you have to keep changing it. I've also tried updating the drivers for the modem to no avail. I'm thinking it might be a problem with the registry but, thats more advansed than I know how to do. Thanks in advance because I know you guys are awesome.

I would look deeper for a possible dialer, and run through the Malware steps.

Yeah, like I said I've already ran antivirus checks with avg and found nothing, but adaware found about 140 objects that we removed. I'm going to try some more programs tommorow but, I dont think thats the issue, I found this article on something simular that seems to be occuring http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q194804/
but whats diffrent is we can get it to connect if we change the info to be correct. Even if it doesnt connect the info just changes back for some reason, also that article doesnt cover why the username keeps having an ip address tacked on to the end. Plus its for a windows 98 so I didnt know if the regedit command would work the same or not. I really dont think there is any malware on the computer thats doing it. I think its something in the registry that has been corrupted and needs to be reset, but I dont know enough about registry editing to even begin. Muchless trying to do that on windows ME being as unstable of an OS as it is. We have the recovery disk but its an emachine that comes with spyware installed on it so that would be a pain but still an option none the less. I was just hopeing for a better solution, I'm not ready to give up yet though.
