I wondered why my computer had slowed down so much.

I checked Registry and found my programs are duplicated. Second entry is exactly the same but followed with .1 .

I am prepared to manually delete the original or the .1 entry, but which is valid?

Is there a free program that will do this automatically?

I've run CC and Spywareblaster. All temporary files and history are removed daily.

    Thanks.

    Many thanks, Mark.

Did that but it didn't solve the problem. All the duplicated programs are in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

    Thanks again, Mark.

I do the basic maintance things on a regular basis.

None of the items listed on the other link exist on my computer. It offers downloads that will take several hours to complete. Because of all the duplicated programs I'm carrying my computer is almost at a standstill. I'll get back to you when I"m done.

BTW, IE issues warnings about downloading from Major Geeks. What's that all about?

    Thanks, Mark. Did all that.

So duplicate entries are normal and we all have them? Even things like:

    HPAddressBk.AddressBooK and HPAddressBk.AddressBook.1

    IAS.BaseCampHost and IAS.BaseCampHost.1

    Microsoft.DirectMusicSection and Microsoft.DirectMujsicSection.1

    Nero.NeroFolder and Nero.NeroFolder.1

    OutlookExpress.AddressBook and OutlookExpress.AddressBook.1

    Theme.Manager and Theme.Manager.1

Those are just examples picked at random. Every program is duplicate.

    Thanks again, Mark.

Unbelievable. I wonder why we have to have two entries.

When I signed in this morning, a screen popped up to tell me I have the wrong version of Windows installed. It asked me to insert a Pack 2 CD to corec this. I don't have such a thing because it was downloaded from Microsoft. Nor do I have an XP disk because it was installed when I bought the computer.

Any suggestions? Should I try to download Pack 2 again? I haven't downloaded Pack 3 because I heard there were a lot of problems with it.

    Thanks, Mark.

I'll try that but Belarc tells me all updates and hot fixes are in place.

I'll be back. (Not a threat.)

    Thanks again, Mark.

All updates downloaded and a couple of programs deleted. My PC is a lot faster now.

SP 3 reconfigured my computer so that helped a lot.

    I appreciate your help.
