Just the other night a lowered my cpu temp 7C by cleaning the front intake fan which was storing major dust. These fans are only capable of doing there job when clean and it doesn't take much dust to restrict air flow on 80 mm fans.
I used a Q-Tip dabbed in alcohol for the real difficult spots and a vacumn cleaner, but not from the inside. i was fortunate enough to be able to remove a front bezel and work from the outside.

The average user says yes. Get some air in a can (compressed air) to do the job. More importantly go to:

and type in the search window Clean your PC. Heaps of stuff.

Can you describe the noise better> Is you pc running where you are moving it? Do you have a tower with a removeable side panel that you can remove easily?
Sound like a possible fan problem.

Another point to consider is do you have the sys on and a disc in your DVD/CD drive causing it to spin at odd angle??? i.e oscilating and or moving eliptically. Make sure your drive tray is empty. Mine makes heaps of noise if I leave a disc inside even when stable at START UP.

Take the side off and see if you can isolate the location of the noise. It you can hear ir but not isolate it, try using a paper towel tube to your ear to locate noise location. If noise is not present, start different programs to increase cpu usage and cpu fan speed to detect problem.

I seem to remember my mate telling me that moving a desktop while it's on can damage the HDD. This was a long time ago, and he did have a 386.. Have things changed since then? Is it safe to mave a desktop while powered?

Not going to hurt it by moveing it carefully a couple of feet. Shouldn't realy hurt anything including hdd
