DVD burn causing BSOD Stop 0x8e (Pinnacle Expression 2.2.1.2)

I've managed to gather 2 completely different sets of information & nothing to bridge the gap!

My parents have a Digital Research dual layer DVD drive that came with Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD v 7x (with Pinnacle Expression 2.2.1.2). We are running Win XP SP2.

I just started testing the video authoring (with uses the Expression), & I can create the project but when I try to burn, it thinks for awhile & eventually crashes with a Stop Code of 0x8e (0xC0000005, 0x806EE756, 0xB7E97B0C, 0x0) ... no messages or driver information. (It also does this if I don't pull the disc out when I restart the system ... odd ...)

Another piece of information ... in Device Manager, in addition to the "dual layer 4x drive" that it lists, I also have "VOBID InstantDrive CD SCSI CdRom Device"

After some research, I found that the VOBID drive is a part of the Pinnacle software & I found instructions on removing it ... but I don't know if removing it will also disable the program, so I haven't tried that yet.

I have found multiple forum complaints of Pinnacle crashing systems, but none with full details ... or ones that refer to KB articles from Pinnacle that I cannot locate. The only other information that I can find are all of the "PR posts" that praise how user friendly the program is ... no actual help for troubleshooting.

I'm willing to remove it, & have found some other options ... but I'd rather not lose all the work that had been done.

So ... any ideas on how to make the software allow me to actually burn without bluescreening? Alternatively, is there any way to convert the project (saved as a .exd file ... which all that I can find on that is that it is related to MS office "control data") to something that I can burn with another program?
