DVD burner problem

I have just downloaded DeepBurner Free and tried to burn a DVD from a file on my hard drive. I had a DVD burned that came from video with several segments from different family videos. I then copied that DVD to my hard drive. When I try to burn a DVD of that DVD with DeepBurner Free, I can browse for the file but the window won't open in the file - the folder of My Videos appears but no files. So I cannot choose the file to burn.

The file does not have a suffix - can I copy it again with a .wav format or something? This is my first effort with DVD burning and I am quite uninformed.

    BYW, what is ISO?

Well sir, you file almost certainly does have an extension, but I would wager you've configured windows explorer to not show them. To show file extensions, please do the following:

    1. Open any windows explorer window
    2. From the 'Tools' menu, select 'Folder Options'
    3. Select the 'View' tab
    4. Uncheck the box next to 'Hide Extensions For Known File Types'
    5. Click 'Apply'

This will cause windows explorer to show the file extensions of all the files it lists. I would expect that your program cannot see your files because it is set to open a different file extension. Is there a drop down box labelled 'Files Of Type' on your open file dialog? If so, change this to the extension of the file you wish to open, or to 'All Files' if it provides that option.

Also, an ISO is an exact copy of a media. For example, you can create an ISO of a DVD, which is a bit by bit copy of the disc. When you burn an ISO onto disc, this translates into the exact filesystem of the source disc. For example, I burn a DVD's ISO onto disc, and am left with a DVD with an AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders. This is usually the most reliable method of backing up a DVD movie.

OK. Thanks! I thought I had that parameter unchecked but I didn't. However, the folder still does not show an extension but when I click on it, the following file extensions appear.
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB

What do each of these have to do with and which one should I choose to use for the burning?

Okay, these are the files that you would find in the VIDEO_TS folder. Each .vob file represents a chapter of the movie. (You can actually play each file in a media player that supports it)

Now, you COULD burn these files to disc, but this method is hit or miss, and you may not end up with a working disc at the end of it all.

You mentioned an ISO earlier... does your software have the capability of writing an ISO from a DVD disc? If not, I would recommend that it be avoided. (I've encounted MANY apps that are really quite poor for the task of backing up a DVD)

My recommendation to you would be to try DVD Decrypter. With this free program, you can write an ISO of a DVD to your hard drive, and if you have a dual-layer burner, or the disc is simply small enough, you can then use DVD Decrypter to burn it onto a blank disc. This has worked flawlessly for me every time I've tried.

However, if you only have a single layer burner, or if the disc is too large to fit on a single layer, you can use DVD Shrink, another great freeware application to compress it to a size that will fit.

Using these applications I've backed up every movie I own, at fantastic quality and reliability. I highly recommend that you at least try them out. I'm certain you'll never want to use anything else again!

    Thanks loads, Mada.

You have given me a lot to work on. I will download the apps you suggested and see what I can learn and accomplish. If I run into a snag I'll check back with you.

I've been tied up with other things and have finally gotten back to trying to burn this DVD. Following your suggestion I used Decrypter to write an ISO to my hard drive - worked fine. But when I tried to use the program to burn that ISO to the DVD, I couldn't find the file to burn. The attachment shows what my screen looked like.

If you can see it clearly enough you will see that the "Files of type" are "all files". That is the only way that the files appear. So, I'm befuddled as to what I need to do from here.

    Any further ideas?

    Thanks!!

Hmmm... I'm sorry Ron, I don't know where you saved your file! It should have prompted you to specify a directory to save to. (next to the folder icon at the top) However, we can search the computer for the file! I always say that its better to get the machine to do the work. To do so, please follow these steps:

    1. Right-click My Computer
    2. Select 'Search'
    3. Select 'All Files And Folders'
    4. Under 'All Or Part Of The File Name' type '*.iso' (without the quotes)
    5. Under 'Look In' makes sure that is says 'Local Hard Drives'
    6. Expand 'More Advanced Options' and ensure that the first three are checked
    7. Click 'Search'

The computer will now find every ISO file on all hard drives, and display their respective locations. One will be the one you ripped with DVD Decrypter. Now, to burn, please follow these steps:

    1. Open DVD Decrypter
    2. From the 'Mode' menu, select ISO --> Write
    3. Under 'Source' navigate to the ISO file by clicking the folder icon
    4. Use the drop down box under 'Destination' to select your DVD burner
    5. Insert a blank disc
    6. Press the button showing an arrow pointing from a hard drive to a disc

Now, the file will burn, assuming that the image is small enough to fit on your disc. If not, then you can use DVD Shrink to compress it to a size that will.

Ahhhh! With a closer look to your screenshot, it appears that you may not have extracted an ISO at all! Did you select ISO Read from the 'Mode' menu to extract the image, Ron? I should have mentioned that DVD Decrypter has the abilty to extract the files from the DVD as well, which is what your screenshot seems to indicate you have done. Try the above suggestions, but if you do not find an ISO file, then we will know what has happened. If this is the case, you will have to do it again, I'm afraid. This time, be sure to click Mode --> ISO --> Read to rip, and Mode --> ISO --> Write to burn. Good Luck!

OK. I think the reason I didn't have an ISO file is because I needed to hit a button that specified it to be an ISO file. So I got it extracted OK. Then I did a burn via ISO write. The message was that the task was completed. I placed it in my DVD player and got a message "Incorrect disk". That was with a DVD_RW so I tried it with a DVD_R and the same thing happened.

I'm at a loss - any other ideas?

Just to rule out your DVD ROM. What happens if you insert the original DVD and other disc's?

Different things - usually I get a window from my DVD Recorder that was on my machine when I bought it. From there I get various options to play it or write it to the hard drive, etc.

I appreciate any help you can give me.

As far as I can tell from your pdf screenshot, you did not save it as an .iso file. Select File>ISO>Read R then select your destination (I usuall pick the desktop so it will be easy to find) then rip. You will end up with a file with an .iso extension. With Deepburner Free you can burn the decrypted ISO file but not the Video_TS or the vob and ifo files to a DVD and expect to get a compliant DVD video.

P.S. save the screenshot as a jpeg or gif instead of a pdf.

You're right that I did not save the file as an ISO but since then I have and am still having problems. See earlier post.
