I have a Dell Dimensions 2400 running XP Pro. Been having some issues with it. First, when you would boot it up, it would fail to recognize the hard drives drives. Would come up primary drive not found. Replaced cables got it so it would boot. System works fine now with the exception of:

Now, in the bios, it is showing my CD Rom and DVD burners aren't installed. Is it possible I have a motherboard failing? If so, how do I diagnose this?

Go to Dell's website and enter the service code on the back of the PC. See if there are any BIOS updates available and/or tech posts on the PC and motherboard model.

If this doesn't solve the problem it's likely the drive controller on the mobo is going bad. I would not attempt to patch this using a PCI drive card; they usually don't play well with a mobo's BIOS for bootable drives.

Given the age of the Dimension 2400, I wouldn't spend much money on it. Unless you can find a used identical mobo cheap that's been pre-tested, this may be a good excuse to upgrade. If funds are tight, look at "off-lease"/"refurbished" PCs at TigerDirect or MicroCenter: One with about the same specs will run about $120-$150 with XP preinstalled, have a 90 day warranty and (if it has extra DDR memory slots) you can add the memory from your dead PC to it.

How are your drives located on the cables? Two HD on one cable and two optical drives on one cable?

Since you were swapping cables around make sure that the cable 0 (or HD cable) is attached to the primary HD and is connected to the motherboard at the correct location. There is writing on the board that tells you where it goes. It should be on the connector closest to the center of the board rather than towards the outside.
