DVD Burner

  1. My Dvd burner has sound and picture when I play a video, but the picture and sound is garbled like you would be pulling a tape throught the mechanism. But if I put in a DVD-RW, the computer does not recognize that there is a disk in the drive. I have conctacted the help support, but they don't seem to know anything more than the average computer user.

Try updating the DVD drive firmware. Visit the manufacturer's web site and look for the downloads/support section. Have the exact model number of your drive handy 'cuz you don't want to get the wrong firmware. In case you're wondering, firmware is like the BIOS for the DVD drive; it controls (among other things) what types of media you can play and burn..... If the drive used to work fine, and this is a recent problem, you may need a lens cleaner for the drive. If neither of these things works, hopefully the drive is under warranty (and you have the receipt) so you can get it replaced....

  3. I did try the cleaner, but that did not help. I did download the firmware, but the file is compressed so I need to get some thing to unzip it. My husband bought I new flat screen monitor. Going through the troubleshooting, many things about the screen resolution came up. Do you think that could be the problem?
