DVD\CD rom drive help

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 that came with a Samsung DVD\CD rom drive # SD-616E. I've tried to install new software but every time I do it tells me to insert the disk but it's already in the tray. I contacted Dell and they were no help. So if anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Thanks

What is the operating system, and are there any errors in Device Manager?

Is the drive displayed correctly in My Computer, and has it ever worked previously?

 

Dell sucks. And the first thing I'd do is try to update drivers for the drive on the internet, through the hardware profile in XP. But maybe you already did. Hey, I'm just a private...

 

It has nothing to do with drivers, you don't need them. Windows has native support for all optical drives.

Even if they were available, updating online via Windows Update is the worst thing you can do.

It hardly ever detects the item correctly, then installs what it thinks is the correct driver. Pretty dangerous stuff.

I have a vague memory of a similar issue with some Dell Dimension 4400 PCs here at work. It seems like to me I found a correction for the issue on a Dell user forum. Unfortunately, I can not remember what the solution was. Try this! Good luck with it.
