dvd/cd rom not reading ANY discs

The drive I'm using is an Optiarc DVD-RW AD 7203S SCSI CD Rom Device.

Hello everybody, I have a problem, and I am wondering if you can help me.

My D drive is listed in "My Computer". According to my device manager, my drive is working properly and has been updated.

I've uninstalled both Itunes and AnyDVD. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Nero. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drive. And I've tried the regedit steps that are on the Microsoft support site.

So basically what is happening is that when I put media into the drive, it starts trying to spin for about 30 seconds, and then it stops. I get the disc icon next to my cursor while the disc is spinning. It's all kinds of media, including DVD's, Cd's, DVD-r, DVD+r, and blank DVD's and blank CD-r's.

When I go to "my computer", and click on the DVD Drive, the disc tray opens and tells me to insert a disc. When I insert the disc, the drive tries to read it for several seconds, and then stops.

I don't know if this will help, but this problem started this morning when I tried to burn a DVD with a new spindle of discs.

I'm not technically savvy at all. When it comes to computers, I have the skill level of a kindergartener. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Greetings, greggurski...

Try this: change your boot order to 'CD first', insert your Windows disk (by the way - which OS are you using?), and try to boot to the CD...if the disk loads, then you know the drive is good - if not, you've got a drive problem...

    Thanks Caliban.

How do I change my boot order?

If I have a drive problem, is it as simple as going out and buying a new DVD burner?

I forgot to mention that I am using Vista...

You'll have to change your boot order in BIOS: upon reboot, press F1, F2, F3, or Delete (whichever key works for your machine - sometimes it's displayed on startup as "Press Fx to enter Setup", or the like)...once in BIOS, you should be able to change the boot order to CD first...

Thanks man. I did that, and I tried the Windows disc. Like all of the other discs, it spun for a few seconds, and didn't read anything.

So I guess I need a new drive. Is that as simple as going to a computer store and purchasing a DVD burner?

Yep - that pretty much tells you it's the drive, as no 3rd-party software is in effect on boot...

Should be a simple swap - take note of the 'SCSI' designation - you might want to jot down all of the drive's specs (or even take the drive with you), as any good tech/salesman should be able to find you a good replacement...

Good luck, and let us know how it goes...
