DVD combo rewriter freezes when used!

I'm (trying2) fix my friend's one-year-old Compac Presario w/ Vista basic. She claims combo drive has never worked since she's bought it brand new (she give's no reasonable Xplaination why she didn't return it). I tested it out. It freezes up when reading a disk and explorer then resumes as if nothing's happened after cd is ejected. I've upgraded firmware-nothing! Same ol' doo-doo. Device Man says everything's fine. So, I reboot using a bootable CD. IT READS! THEN, then, then it seems to get "stuck" w/ drive light staying on and I have to hard boot. Well, She bought a new HP combo drive to replace old one (my suggestion) and calls me to install it. Fine, I was glad to help her, but guess what? Yup, same ol' doo-doo. Although another older cd-rom drive works with no problem? Has anybody any Xperience or advice? I'm stumped!

 

CHange the driver from dual ide channel, to compac (non-dual type) ide. It works now. There was only one ide interface on the mother board.

 

Hmmmm.... interesting fix.... too bad it took 7 months to get figured out!!! LOL roflmao I'll remember this though. I've run in to similar issues, but always seemed to solve it in a different manner...

Actually, I figured it out 3 days later from the date of the original post. Lost alot of hair during them 3 days. lol. The funny part is that it took me this long to remember to post my discovery! Thanks.
