   hi, welcome to major geeks.
   
   as for software, vlc gives you an option to play dvd's from a file:
   http://majorgeeks.com/VLC_media_player_d4674.html
   just select "open folder" in the media menu
   
   windows media player will work too, but it's not as easy.. you can select a .vob file to play, but you have to pick the right one.
