I'm not sure if this is a hardware problem, or software problem? I'm helping someone work on their laptop (had some minor malware problems), and the DVD drive does not work. It's a HP Pavilion DV6700 (1st link below). You put a disk in, the led flashes, and you can't eject the disc (you have to use a paperclip to eject it).

I went thru the troubleshooting steps here, Microsoft Fix it did not work, scanned for hardware changes in device manager, didn't come up with anything.

Basically, I think it is seen in the bios, as I can do this - In the Boot Order list, look for an optical disc drive entry. Depending on your notebook model and specific optical disc drive, the entry name indicates the exact type of disc drive you have (for example, it may read CD/DVD Rom Drive.

If there is no entry in the Boot Order list for an optical disc drive, then the problem is most likely hardware-related. Contact HP Customer Support for further assistance on resolving the issue.
) However, it's not seen in My Computer, or in Device Manager.

I ran across this link, however there is no upper/lower filters?

It might be a bad drive?, but thought I'd give it a shot.

    Thx,

    hey sosaman,

you may want to try a

    -system restore

-if there's any 3rd party burning software installed or .iso loaders like daemon tools, you may want to uninstall them and then reboot. check dev man to see if windows picks up the drive again.

    -you can also visit http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00678214&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&site=null&lang=en&key=null&product=3636595#N581

expand the Update the device drivers, software, and firmware section and try the HP support assistant.

Did you go into device manager and uninstall it? After a reboot, see if it is still being a problem. It very well could be a dying drive if you have to use a paper clip to open it.
