My DVD drive is not recognizing DVDs, but it plays CDs fine. Is there something I can fix?? Nothing has changed unless my son did something *sigh*

    Thanks,
    Lisa

what OS do you have? I'm going to assume you have XP ... so this advice would be only if you have XP

have you tried reinstalling the DVD Drives drivers? start>control panel>admin tools>Computer Management>Device Manager ... you should see "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" open the drop down menu and right click your drive then tick uninstall ... then reboot ... you should get a pop up saying system has detected new hardware blah blah ...

also what region is the DVD is your drive encoded for? goto the device manager>right click your drive>properties>DVD Region ... it will say at the bottom of the pop "current region" if it says not selected or USA then you should be OK

what player are you using? how does windows recognize the drive? as a DVD or CD?

Thanks for the advice, I did uninstall and reinstall. Checked the zone, it is zone 1. That worked and I had to do it again! Now it is only recognizing the DVD it feels like. Is it being a movie critic? LOL

Sorry, um what kind of drive? The one Dell put in :) I looked and it says: Samsung DVD-ROM SD-610D. I think it is recognizing it as a DVD.

What can I do? Besides hit it with a hammer :)

Is it only old DVD's it's recognizing? If so, maybe a driver update is in order.

I've found that only for removing drives that have rusted into place is a hammer useful. Or for destroying hard disks permanently and completely, in which case it's also much fun.

the only other things I could suggest is updating your firmware(goto dells or samsungs website dl the firmware and update, keep in mind this can be a bit tricky so try and print out the instructions and follow them carefully) .. also are you sure you have the right codecs? CLICK HERE to dl the Ace codec pack or CLICK HERE to dl X-Codecs form this site .. the ace codecs are 50MB and a 175 MB install but the X-Codec pack is alot smaller and may have all the codecs you need
