Hi, hopefully someone can help me. I bought a PC a few months ago. I recently put a new DvD drive in it. I restarted my PC and once it started it automatically installed the DvD player, but now I have no DvD drives at all. In the Device Manager it doesn't even reconize a place for a DvD driver. I called Gateway and the only thing they told me was to take it back to the place i purchased the PC and they can repair it, but now due to me opening the PC to put the drive in, they told me my warrenty was voided, Thanks for your time.

Welcome to Major Geeks! For openers, I have some questions:
Did the drive ever work normally? What happened before the drive started acting up? Does the drive show up in My Computer? Which version of Windows are you running? Does the drive open and close and light up? Does the drive show up in the BIOS?

If you can answer at least some of these questions, it will make helping you much easier.

Drive use to work perfectly, it didn't have a single problem until i put the 2nd drive in, it does not show in my computer, I have VISTA, It does open and close but doesn't read anything, and for the last question I don't know what my BIOS is. Thanks

I tryed the first method with the tech. support from gateway, that didn't work and i just tried the second method and i got the same results. The guy from gateway told me that my computer wasn't even recognizing the dvd drive. In device Manager i still don't have a dvd location to install a driver.

So if I'm understanding you started with one optical drive added a second and now no drives appear. If that's the case, remove the second drive then see if the computer still recognizes the first drive.

Can you answer any of these questions?
I have a couple of others too: are the CD drives IDE (also called ATA) or are they SATA (serial)? If IDE, do they share the same cable, and have you checked the jumpers? The drive on the end of the cable should be set for master, the one in the middle of the cable should be set for slave. If the original drive was installed by the factory, it is probably set for cable select.

I have already removed the second drive and still i have the same problem.

I believe they are IDE. Now when i hooked the second drive up, my pc already had another port on the same ribbon as the original drive i just plugged it in and also plugged in the power plug. Question for you, being that i plugged the second drive in with a port further along the ribbon could i have made the second drive the master drive and the original drive became the slave drive. Thanks for your time.

Sorry about the slow response..... we do get busy ;)
Yes, that is possible. Also, if the original drive at the end of the cable is jumpered for 'cable select' and the new drive is jumpered for master, you'd have a conflict. 'Cable select' defines the drive at the end of the cable as a master, and the drive plugged in to the 2nd positionas the slave; for this to work correctly, both drives must jumpered for cable select. However, I always strongly recommend that cable select not be used for many reasons, this being one of them. IMHO it's best to always jumper the drive at the end of the cable as the master, and the 2nd drive as the slave.

I'm not sure what you mean by jumpered and cable select. If you wouldn't mind would you please explain them for me. Another question would be how would I get DvD to show back up in my Device Manager. Again, Thank You For Your Time and Help.

I say Remove both DVD drives and re-install one. See what happens.
