DVD drive stop reading and writing

Hi there

I am the owner of ASUS A6000U series Laptop. It was very fair to me until now and suddenly it stopped reading DVD's and burn them. I tired all the tricks provided for Tom K in http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=190216, but vain.

It all started when my brother tried to load Nero 7 essentials CD. I uninstalled it coz it is causing some mess in the startup. Since then my DVD driver is not reading DVD's. It is generally showing as E:\DVD/CD Rom Drive when noting inserted in the DVD rom, but when a DVD is inserted, the drive name is changing to E:\CD Drive.

I tried uninstalling from the Device Manager and rebooted the system - still no use. I also tried downloading mscdex.exe file (i cant remember) which is essential for DVD drivers, but didnt work.

Kindly help me out. Please dont suggest me to format Windows XP SP3. I have some work softwares installed on my system which cant be retrived once I lost them.
