I have a NEC ND 1100A DVD RW drive. It will burn to a CD, but when I put a (Sony) DVD-RW disc in the drive, it does not recognize it (using Nero) to burn a mp3 disc.

I can play a DVD without any problem.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using and is it fully upto date?

Have you only had Nero burning installed on your PC and what version is it and/or have you had otehr burning software on your PC and uninstalled or just now using Nero?

What I would try first as CD/DVD read write issues can be traced to the upper and lower filters as various applications can corrupt them and burning applications are one of those types is to run this advice http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=145532

    XP SP3

    It is up to date

    I just installed Nero 8

This is the only burning software I have had installed on this machine

In the device manger, the driver details for this drive are: c:\windows\systems32\drivers\cdromsys

is this the appropriate driver for a DVD RW?

    thanks for your reply

The drives may not have that media listed in its "table".
I'd look for a firmware update, see if that gets it.

On time I had a MadDog DVD-RW drive that had shoddy media support, there were a few hacks to add media the drive would recognize - big hassle.
Firmware updates help, then try different media.

"Firmware updates for NEC DVD drives will generally only add new media information and will not solve issues in conjunction with some software packages.
If the firmware upgrade is not performed correctly or if the power supply is interrupted during the upgrade, the drive may be rendered unusable. If you wish to upgrade the firmware, you do so at your sole and exclusive risk. NEC takes no responsibility for any errors or problems with any firmware upgrade. This software is provided "as is" with no warranty whatsoever. NEC will not supply any technical service or support regarding this firmware or any upgrade. "

I tried the firmware update for this drive from Dell. it did not help.

does is matter if the disc is -RW or +RW?

Apparently YES! From this page, http://www.dvd-gear.com/nec-nd-1100a.htm
it only burns to +R and +RW; so you have the wrong kind of DVDs for this particular drive. Most drives now a days aren't as fussy.

Now that you have helped me solve that problem (wrong type of media for the drive) I decided to upgrade to a newer DVD RW. I connected to my computer and it is not being detected. I took it to a friends computer and it was automatically detected. This drive is a Lite on it model iHAP 122. it does not show up in the device manager.

Once again, any suggestions will be appreciated

How? Internal or external? If external what kind of plug? Also the brand and model would help in troubleshooting. Did it come with a disk? Did you install the software on the disk?

    Hey there,

Check that your user account has permissions to add hardware.
Check that usb ports are not disabled / turned off in the bios.
Verify that the device is getting power at home and that your power supply is getting enough "juice" to the device.

It is an internal drive lite-on-it iHap 122. I disconnected the NEC drive that I was discussing in this thread and installed this one. It is on the IDE cable, it is getting power. It did not come with a disk

I am very limited in my computer knowledge. It was my understanding that it would be detected as a plug n play device.

A note of thanks to all of you who have responded. A friend of mine told me about this forum. He said that no matter what the problem, someone was always willing to help. He was right. I appreciate the responses

Is it jumpered correctly? If you took the old one out use the same jumper setting - Master or slave or Cable select.
The jumpers are on the back of the drive by the cables.

I tried all three positions and I even tried it with no jumper.

Is there anything in the bios that would affect it?

It shouldn't need a disc to install.
You should have it on it's own IDE cable. Set as Master. One far end of the cable to motherboard and other end to the drive. Double-check that both ends of the IDE cable are firmly in place.

Do you have any bootable CDs? Like a Windows installation disc. You could try starting the PC with the bootable disc in the drive. If the installation program begins then the DVDROM is being recognized by the PC/BIOS but not Windows.
