DVD Drive will not work

The DVD drive on my PC will not work i.e. it won't play DVDs, but it plays CDs fine.

Someone told me that buying and installing the software called 'InterVideo' would resolve my problem. It doesn't. So I've tried the solution in MajorGeeks in the "Guides and Frequently Asked Questions" > "Other" > "How to fix missing DVD/CD drives not showing up in windows explorer".

My PC's manufacturer (Medion UK) advised that I retore my PC to its factory settings. I think this is a drastic solution.

My OS is Windows XP HE (32 bit) SP2; not sure what other info would help you.

 

Can you post a model and make of the DVD drive in question? We may be able to track down a fix for you that way (firmware for example).

 

To dlb: I cannot find the name of the manufacturer or model. Device manager just says it is a IDE DVD-ROM 16x and that the manufacturer is Standard CD-ROM Drives. The front of the tray that you place the DVDs in also just says DVD ROM. The region is set to 1 and I live in the UK where the DVD region is 2 but it will not allow me to change it. The driver appears to be just a standard Microsoft driver.

Toplodr: No, I don't think it has ever worked with DVDs.

 

I could ask them to send me a new DVD but I doubt they will after all my PC is no longer under warranty. If they refuse is there anything else that we can try to resolve this issue.
