I have a Dell Studio 1737, When I put in a DVD, it will start and play maybe 2 chapters then restart. If you fast forward to next chapter, it backs up to previous chapter-eventually it stalls and will not go back or forward. I have Norton 360 and am using Dell Media for playing. It is not the DVD player-does the same with an external DVD player. Any idea's?

Just trying to clarify here, these are DVDs you have burned that are in question, and they have the same symptoms in another player other than your PC?

No, these are Store bought movies. They will start, get thru 2-3 chapters and then it restarts the movie-I am thinking a software conflict-does the same using Dell Media & windows media. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Just to double check, is that "external DVD player" attached to the TV, or a PC?

I put an external onto the pc & it did the same thing as when I just used the dvd player in the pc.

As previously stated, Dell Media and Windows Media-tried to download GOM Player as sugjested, but could not get sound to work. Tried to find updates for both dell & windows players but none were available.

I have not had any luck finding a discussion about this issue. I have talked to dell and they want to connect to my system to see if they can figure out what's going on while they read solutions on a pc. of paper. Have spent 6 hours on the phone with them and no solution.

For the sake of the process of elimination, have you tried these DVDs on a standard, store bought player?

I would expect them to work, but what the hell, right?

Yep, they work just fine-I am a trucker which is why I use my comp. for playing the movies-when this happened the first time, I went home & tried them -they play fine. I still think it is a software issue, and am trying to find a downloadable dvd player just to see if I am right. Thanks for everyones help and interest in this pain in the ... thing.

What is Dell Media? When you click the Help about, what does it say?

Dell media is the OEM software from Dell itself for music, video, etc. Nice laptop, by the way. Prefer AMD myself, though. Have you checked the Add/Remove programs list from the Control Panel to see if it is listed? I do not believe it to be a "core component", so it should be. Did the Dell tech have you try to uninstall/re-install the software application at any time?

Dell Media is Dell's version of Windows Media-when I click help in dell media it says no such issue found. I have downloaded a online dvd player and am now using that to play dvd's. It is working fine. Thanks for all the help.

What player are you using that works? If someone else has a Dell Studio computer, it might help them also.
