dvd problems

    I copied movies through my dvd recorder but I can't play them on my computer what is my problem. I can play dvds that i've bought but not the ones I recorded. help would be great sammy:p

    Hi and Welcome


    Its very likely that you dont have a Codec installed to play the copied DVDs as many ripping and burning apps, change the format to something like DivX, so try installing a codec package as these generally have all the main formats http://www.majorgeeks.com/Vista_Codec_Package_d5326.html ( even though its name is Vista, its for Windows 2000 and XP also )


    What software are you using to play the movies back? if you get any error messages when they dont play what are they?

    I installed the codec package but still a no go. I can put my copied dvd in my laptop without a problem viewing them but I can't in my desktop.I installed xp on my desktop where I use to have which I am ashamed to say windows me. did something to wrong when I lost all my dvd info. sammy

    Just to doublecheck and I appologise first, do bought DVDs play ok in the desktop, and its just the burned ones that dont?

    Do other burned CD/DVDs work in the desktop, dont need to be video, data, music will do?

    Was this an upgrade from ME to XP or a Clean Install of XP?

    What software are you using to backup these DVDs?

    Do you have Arcsoft Photoimpression installed as this can cause issues with some DVD backup software.


    Odd occasions that burning software is removed and re-installed and general driver corruption, its possible that this will fix the none playing of burned CD/DVDs http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=145532


    What Software are you using to try and play these DVDs
