Ok, here goes. My question is can you burn to a DVD-R as a data disc with just a CD-R/CD-RW drive and a DVD-Rom drive? I was wondering because my friend has cable and he has all kinds of movies and stuff on his computer. Obviously 30GB is gonna take a lot of CD-Rs so I figured if I could I'd get DVD-Rs if I could because they're 4.7GB. Any suggestions or answers would be appreciated.

No. Recordable DVDs can only be used in a DVD burner, not in a CD burner. You can buy a DVD burner cheap, especially if you order online.

I thought that I saw a couple of programs on the internet that said you could burn with a DVD-Rom. This sounded impossible to me...but just wondering

A DVD ROM drive doesn't have the hardware for burning a DVD, no program can change that. A DVD burner is the way to go for backup. I had my HD backed up on 11 CDs, now it's backed up on 3 DVDs.

I have not heard of any programs that will do that for you, you need a dvd burner and software to burn to a dvd. You can pick them up for pretty cheap these days, probably even less than $75. Check the net for prices.
