DVD-R/RW Drive Malfunctioning

I recently reformatted and reinstalled everything and got it all working and I go to watch a DVD and find that it wont work! I can't even install programs off of CD's or copy files over from DVDs now. I tried to copy a file off of a DVD and the window comes up as if it were copying but it never copies over. It never fully spins up either. Not quite sure how to fix this problem or if the drive is bad or what.

Thanks for the help earlier with my question too! I got it working and what a quick fix that was so thanks to the MG folk for the help.

Did you install a DVD software like Intervideo if your DVD unit came with it? Also, did you ever try to flash the firmware of the DVD drive, and it failed?

 

Never tried a firmware flash, and I installed the nvidia dvd player that came with my video card and i couldn't play DVDs through that or WMP

 

If the drive never spins up, then either power supply is not able to supply enough juice for everything in the computer case, or the drive has gown bad. Sad thing, I have seen more Lite-On drives go bad compared to Pioneer or Sony.

 

That seems so strange. It worked fine to reinstall everything, no problems, I go watch a DVD movie on my comp and bam it just stops working. When i put in a data cd of backed up files and try to copy them over the window pops up from auto run and then it freezes and sometimes explorer crashes.

 

How many watts is your Power Supply? Also, how long have you had the problem child?

 

It's a shuttle psu so it runs a little more powerful then it says but it's a 240W PSU. This problem has been going on for about a month but i never got around to trying to fix it until I bought my ipod and couldn't install the software.
