Dvd-Ram Drive wont burn dvds

I have a presario v5030ea compaq with a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-840s drive i reformatted my computer a few weeks ago to get rid of a spyware problem and only recently have i had need to burn a dvd now i can burn a cd read cds and read and rip dvds i just cant burn dvds either data or video i was wondering could it be the type or brand of dvd i am useing although its the only type i have ever used and have always bruned my dvds with them. I previously used programs such as sonic dvd now and there has been a problem with the reinstalation of that particular software i cant fix so i unistalled it and am using nero ultra edition which i shelled out for. When i try the speed test or the burn image test i get an error something about sense and (0000000) although earlier the error seemed to occur within the first minute of burning so i am considering it is the dvds although i have used only theses ones in the past i would appreciat any help on the matter. Also i cant find a firmware upgrade for the dvd eiter
