Dvd-ram stopped/won't function

    Running XP-3. Have a LG HL-DT-ST-DVD-RAM that suddenly stopped burning/reading dvds. Nothing at all happens when video dvd put in; Will record/play cd's. Tried an external DVD burner (USB) that didn't function also. Message says 'unable to perform function' Did hardware uninstall/reinstall with no change. Thinking it could be an OS issue as external drive wouldn't work also?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
