I have the DirecTV DVR plus that should allow me to stream videos from my my Windows 7 PC to my TV. The DVR is supposed to support mpeg-2 and mpeg-4 formats. What would be a low hassle DVD ripping program that would let me rip some standard CD's to be viewable on my DVR? Thanks.

Handbrake, dvd flick are totally free, and Tenorshare is also a good dvd ripping software with a little paying.

DVDFlick converts to DVD format; it is not a DVD ripper. Handbrake will convert un-ecrypted DVDs to MPEG-4 format (.MKV, .MP4, .AVI). Personally, I use either avi.NET or AutoGK to back up un-encrypted DVDs to XVID/DIVX format .AVI files. You can set custom file sizes (for example: 700mb) so a full movie will fit on a single regular CD. I also occasionally use WinX Free DVD Ripper which will take a store-bought movie from your collection and will rip it to any number of different formats depending on your desired settings and configuration. All these programs are totally FREE!!!

(Keep in mind that converting/ripping DVDs to other formats is a very time consuming process if you want quality rips; I have a fairly high-end quad core PC, and a full rip from DVD to AVI can take up to 45min)

When I rip a DVD to an avi, the rip takes as long as the movie; so if it is a 2hour movie, it takes 2 hours to rip.
