Dvd writer is pretending it's a Cd burner only

Ok, my first post :-o.
I have an e-machine H series. I don't know the name of my dvd burner and I did look. The two names on the front are DVD R/RW and DVD-R DL. My husband claims that the person he got it from said it burns DVD's and I have a program to do so. We never had the need to try until now.
My problem is I recently recovered from a malware attack and want to back up my pictures/videos/programs etc.. and it's too much info for CD's. When I try to copy to the DVD (I've tried DVD-R and DVD+R) it won't do it.
When there is no disc in it says DVD RW. Disc in it says CD Drive.
I've already checked for new drivers, uninstalled it and reinstalled it. There's no conflict with any other device. I can't find support on e-machines because it's too old. I run XP home - service pack three.
Please tell me if it actually burns DVD's at all or how to fix it.

Download/install everest if you dont already have it, and post a report of your spec's.
