DVD writing not working.

i have a LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1693S ...
it can read CDs.. read DVDs but cannot write DVDs. i tried writing with various softwares (Nero 7, Alcohol 120%, Gnome Baker) in windows XP as well as ubuntu 7.04.
