This is a fairly new DVDRW made by LiteOn, model DH20A1H. It reads and writes perfectly, but occasionally it sounds like a jet taking off. I mean it gets REALLY loud. There's no grinding or clicking, no scary sounds. Just a loud whirring hum like a really loud CPU fan might sound like. Should we be worried about the drive maybe dying soon? I know some optical drives are louder than others, but this one is loud enough to be heard from an adjoining room....

Hi dlb! i have had this happen on my panasonic DVDRW and on the one at work which is a brand new DELL. Have you tried older discs? I think its something to do with the speed of whatever disc is written in i get it with some discs and also have noticed some make BUZZING sound which again i THINK is where the disc is made offset and spins out off balance maybe cheaper discs not quite sure!

I've got a couple of Lite-On drives some 2.5 years old and they were loud at full 48x speed out of the box when installing software but usually pretty quiet when watching a movie..

Now that you guys mention it, I burned and erased an older CDRW disc rated at 4x max and it was really quiet. But then I used a factory disc to install some software and that's when it got really loud. I guess that makes sense though, the faster it spins the louder it gets. But jeez.... it's
    R E A L L Y freekin' loud! ;)

If it's vibrating you can try screwing it into your case from both sides. A lot of times the noise is increased if the drive isn't fully secured.

I have a Pioneer DVR-111D and it's basically the same. Watching a movie/burning a 4X CD/DVD it's pretty well silent. Installing things (MS Office, something from my XP CD) it whirrs right up like a jet.
