The video card I just bought has a DVI port as well as VGA... it also came with a DVI to VGA adaptor.

I don't know what DVI is, should I use the adaptor or just plug into the VGA?

The monitor I have is 6 years old.

DVI (Digital Visual Interface) is a superior connector for better quality imaging on a monitor. Most LCD's have DVI input and higher end CRT's so as well.

since your monitor is older, you most likkely only have VGA input.

the DVI to VGA adapter is inluded so that you can run dual monitors even if you only have 2 VGA minitors. you will not see any better quality by using it.

    hope that helps
