No idea. Is it legal, I am guessing no?

Oh I figured there were some ways to enhance options not steal service I have all the channels. Sorry bout that. I also figured there would be ways to utilize the hard drive in them. Again sorry I wasn't trying to get shady advice I assure you. Thanks though, I'll phrase may questions more appropriately

Most DVR hacks are to copy movies recorded from the hard drive to CD or DVD. That is a form of piracy, unfortunately. Now if you are just trying to increase hard drive space, thats a little different.

If I were to record a movie from my TV to VHS, would it be classed as piracy?

    Technically, yes.

Just because the ability is there, doesn't mean the law is on the same page.

That's about it Drive space, I have a pretty extensive video library. My DVR allows you to copy movies(of course) but I figured there were extras I didn't know about. Ways to do more with it . Thanks though. Also I was able to hook up my dvd to the dvr and copy whatever I wanted It just isn't worth it. Any way to increase the amount of time allotted for recording? That's the kind of stuff I was wondering about.

I'm betting there is a clause in the Dish Network agreement forbidding altering the hardware. You may want to check into that before doing anything first.

My Cox DVR has firewire ports on it, so I am assuming I could just add another drive to it. Maybe not. Does your DVR have the same thing?

No. It's fair use as covered under the Betamax judgement by the U.S. Supreme Court. Distribute it in any way and you do cross the line.

I don't know, but I'm going to take a look rifgt now if so what would adding another drive do for me, more recording space? could I download to a laptop?
    I do have the ports.

    Ok.

I'm guessing that doesn't apply to DVRs and such though.
