e: drive is not read by the computer

I installed a new hard drive after the old one crashed. However, two drives have the wrong assignments, and my computer doesn't read the travel drive,
which should be e:

Since it contains a crucial file for my operating system XP Pro SP 2, I'm anxious to get it into my computer so the windows repair (done because a file was not found and the instructions were to do a repair) can continue.

Currently, My Computer lists
3 1/2" floppy a:
local disk c:
DSK1_VOL2 d: What is THIS?
XPSP1a_ENG_PRO e: This one should be the travel drive, not the installation CD which is currently in the CD drive.

How do I get the computer to read the travel drive?

Ummm... Your travel drive?
Not sure what you mean by "can't read".
If you can double click the device and look at the files inside...
The computer can read it.

I think you are able to read said travel drive...
It's just designating as a D: device rather than E:

What I would do is unplug said drive...
Reboot and if there is any software or driver that's needed for this drive to work...
Reinstall and go through the proper steps.
Uninstall first if you need to.

Otherwise...
The letter designation really shouldn't be much of an issue.
If you can be more specific to why it would be an issue maybe we can help you from there.

 

I can't double click the device. It's plugged into e: but the computer reads the DVD drive as e:

After using every spare minute for a month, including trying things in the middle of the night as I thought of them, to fix the PC, I threw in the towel. Really wanted to find the fix and implement it successfully, but I need to do other things for Christmas. I broke down and took it to a repair shop.
