Turned on PC yesterday and out of the blue---no sound, no BIOS beep on boot, no Windows welcome sound, no sound with ZOOM.

    Lenovo Thinkpad T400 - Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

Icon in system tray looks fine. One-click mixer menu looks fine. Device manager claims the driver is working and all is well. Disable & reenabled driver; nothing. Uninstalled & reinstalled driver; nothing.

Note: the device itself is listed as High Definition Audio Device manufactured by Microsoft, with no brand name. Lenovo's site takes me to a page offering drivers for a Conexant device, whose version # is radically different from the version I am looking at (6.1.7601.17514).

Does it have anything to do with my cat walking across the keyboard yesterday? (kidding/not kidding!) HALP!

Perhaps puss clicked the mute key accidentally. I would click this & see if the sound returns.

    Goddess:

O-M-G, all this caterwauling for nothing! You are right! I didn't even know there was a "mute" key on the keyboard. And unfortunately Lenovo never thought to put an alert icon in the system tray.

Leave it to a cat to solve my problem. You have no idea how funny that actually is: I live on a farm with a bunch of cats, and I'm sure they are the most delightful creatures in the world.

As the saying goes: Cats were worshiped in Ancient Egypt. They have not forgotten this.

    Thank you! :D

Glad that to hear that was it. If you have the volume icon in the system tray it should show an X when the volume is muted.
Our cats usually are good a standing on the TV remote so change channels.

The sound system tray icon for Win 7 is poor. I show an X over my sound even when the sound works! This happens a lot on my desktop computer. To get rid of the X, I open the volume control, press mute then press unmute and the X is gone.

Have you checked for any newer drivers from the PC’s manufacturer plodr? I would expect you have though.

I don't have a sound card. I'm using the chip that came in this cheap eMachine from 2009. I doubt eMachines has the model up on its site because it is so old. It is no problem for me to remove the X by clicking the icon, turning on mute then turning it off. It takes less than 10 seconds. Before I discovered this way, I used to reboot the computer - now that took time.
