Hi, My little brother has all his games on a backup drive and of course doesn't have a backup of the backup drive because he is just a teen...

We tried different wire, different laptops all to no avail.
    Followed all the advice here:
    https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12455/related/1

WD drive utilities doesn't recognize the drive.

    Data Lifeguard says:
    Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
    Model Number: WD easystore 2648
    Unit Serial Number: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    Firmware Number: 1030
    Capacity: 0.00 GB
    SMART Status: Not Available
    Test Result: PASS
    Test Time: 22:51:15, April 06, 2021

Recovery Rx doesn't recognize the drive with the backup drive.

Fully updated windows and driver files. USB has been unistalled and reinstalled so has the easystore, have updated drivers.

Any other help would be greatly appreciated. I don't know what else I can do for him and he's crying. I can't find any advice that I haven't tried.

Get CrystalDiskInfo and also Hard Disk Sentinel and see if it'll read the drive. The WD tool is worthless. Also, get driver booster free from this site to make sure the drivers are up to date as usb can be finnicky.

However, I've had about 6 of those drives. I've shucked all of them but 1 which is a 10 TB external. 2 drives actually did die on me though as while the disk was still spinning it got bumped (hooked the drive outside of the computer) and got trashed. Good news is that the case is rock solid and I've had it drop hard about 10 times without fault. It could be a partition issue as I currently have one now with one. I have data on it, but windows shows the partition as RAW so I can't access any files in windows (linux I can) due to the fact that I need to go back into linux and correct the issue because I had it dual boot on that drive.

Good news is that passed the smart test, but you need to look at the 2 programs that I mentioned as it will show you better stats and warnings.... it will say drive is in poor condition or failing and you better transfer files from it right away, so I think there' some hope.

I don't know if I can post links but I can give you a place where people know a lot more than me if those 2 programs doesn't help. Sential has a lot of extended testing unlike windows chkdsk or whatever WD does besides a basic smart. Tell him there is still hope if he's really bummed. If all else fails, I can get the games for him and send it to you guys.
