    Hi

old laptop video controller has died and decided to get a nice new shiney i5 windows 7 box of tricks. Old laptop can load windows but screen is in very low res and with lots of distortion any way tried running easy transfer wizard on old laptop but it needs screen res of at least 800x600 which I cant get (thats why i bought new one!!)

Anyone know of an option to run transfer prog from command prompt or suggest another utility that will help rather than me have to sit for hours creating new accounts and customising settings

connecting the drive as an external unit would have allowed access to files, once you had got past security rights issues. That was not really the problem as I had a data backup that I was able to restore files but it was the hassle of setting up preferences and multiple email accounts, rembering server names and paswords etc. In the end I bit the bullet and sat for a few hours and recreated the whole lot, where as easytransfer would do it fairly well with just a bit more tinkering in minutes. Anyway job done now and thanks for your input..

    Glad your problem is resolved.

I wonder though, does your laptop have a video out port? I know you said the video controller was shot, I wonder if you pushed the video output to a normal size monitor if you could have changed the resolution.

yes tried video out but no signal, could have expermented with tv out or screen via usb but i was looking for easy solution not to create possible further problems.

So does anyone want to buy a sony vaio with knackered video controller/motherboard??

when I did sales presentations, I had to hit my Fn(funtion button) and depress F7 to change the video output to external source, did u try that or just hook up the cable and expect to see the video on an external monitor?
