this popped up in some article ("you know what 'eat footballs' means..."), but in fact, i DON'T know!

    google reveals 2 camps:

    1) being obsessed with the game (variation on "eat, sleep, breathe football" etc)
    2) poverty and/or wasting money. i.e. so poor you have to "eat footballs" or blowing your whole paycheck and then having to "eat footballs".

neither is a great fit to the original article. is there some THIRD, common, meaning to this phrase?

don't think i've ever heard it, frankly.

I've never heard this term either. Maybe it's an inside joke within Google.

that said, it does make a certain sense and fits that list perfectly -- i do believe you've got it! on ni kiru!!

you speaking from personal knowledge, or just better googling than kono ore?

I have heard the term, "eating footballs" and it has nothing to do with food in this context. Actually there is three different colored footballs in varying strengths. It's among a group of people who are talking in code basically.
A picture so you can see why they are called footballs:

Not really. I've never eaten any 'footballs', but I have heard the term in the sushi context. A young lady explained it to me while we were sharing some dim sum many, many moons ago - we were discussing ethnic foods and the reference popped up...

they're an aquired taste! wet, stale, sushi is the first impression.

nothing foul -- like natto or shiokara -- but somehow just plain...bleccch.

soak toast in a bowl of water prior to eating, you'll get the idea.

that said, a few years later you suddenly wake up to find you've got a craving!! :-D
