Listening to my radio, this morning, while on MG, I heard an interview with one of the founders of www.locavores.com

Their mantra is "to try and buy all the stuff that you consume, from a producer, or grown, within 100 miles (160Km) of your home. An interesting challenge.

Eat Locally!

Welcome to Locavores:
We are a group of concerned culinary adventurers who are making an effort to eat only foods grown or harvested within a 100 mile radius of San Francisco for an entire month. We recognize that the choices we make about what foods we choose to eat are important politically, environmentally, economically, and healthfully. In 2005, we challenged people from the bay area (and all over the world) to eat within a 100 mile radius of their home for the month of August

Obviously, it will be easier in some parts of the countries, in the world, but still a challenge none the less. Here in Cairns, it is easy to get local fruit and vegetables, but the rest would be hard to do, as multinationals have centralised their operations, forcing small local growers, of various stuff, out of business.

The 2 dominant supermarket chains in Australia, for instance, with their home brands, are forcing national growers out of business with their imported "equivalents", or screwing the national growers down to such a low price for their produce, that the national growers give up.

Yeh its a big problem that we'll have to address whether we like it or not,ATM the fuel used to transport the food from far away is cheap enough to make it worth while,with the rapidly increasing fuel prices I'd be suprised if we arnt all eating fruits within season in the next decade

That or get that fusion reactor working or invade Iran and take thier oil,joke,kind of

within 100 feet of my back door I have:
Tomatoes
green peppers
jalapeno peppers
two varieties of cucumbers
watermelon
sweet corn
plums
grapes
apples
pears
peaches
cherries
cabbage
and horseradish
the only fuel I use to transport it is SWEAT!!!!!
P.S. I also have a bunch of flowers cause sometimes you need to stop and smell the roses!!!!!!

Bit hard to grow stuff when you live in a unit (flat) (apartment) like I do.
I'm no greenthumb either, but at least I support the local fruit and veggie producers, every Sunday, at Rusty's Markets, here in Cairns. Bazza
