My ebay item is ending in about 15 minutes, come to find it this morning with loads of bids from people with no feedback and it clearly states that if a user has less than 5 positive feedback then they should email me first. No such emails!

Had to cancel a lot of bids - there was even one for £9,999 and the item isn't expecting much more than £80!

i stopped using E-Bay for that very reason i would put bids in and then in the last 20 seconds or so a new bid just a fraction higher than mine would come in and not leave enough time for a fresh bid so it would be rigged in my opinion unless you do the same and stick a last attempt 20 or30 second before the end plus you got the stupid bids in there as well.

i really think it's time E-Bay got it's house in order they have the technology but they are making huge profits and are no longer concerned with the users just the bottom line

Yeh - I usually up my bid within the last few seconds and hope my connection doesn't die!

Managed to get it to sell for £83 in the end to a legit buyer though :)

On ebay, there is an option, under buyer requirements, that you can block specific bidders from bidding on your items, because we both know 99% of people dont read the whole thing. They just look at the pictures and the price rolleyes

I've thankfully never had a problem selling but I have had a few problems buying and I do read the whole thing.

    Ahem...

I'm one of those people you're talking about. It's called sniping, and if you really want something you almost have to do it. I'll wait until 30 seconds or less to bid, pick my personal price, and add 2 cents just in case (2 cents will win a bid if you happen to pick someone elses maximum). BTW, when I say less than 30 seconds I mean it, the closer to end of auction you can get the better your chances.

To date I've been pretty successful with sniping, so so with anything else.

I currently have 88(?) 100% positive feedback, and no paypal account (don't get me started with them).

I used to do that, but decided I didn't feel like it anymore. I put in the absolute highest amount I'm willing to pay the first time I bid. Usually it's more than the current bid, so that when someone comes in last second, my bid holds. It's worked for me most of the time.

@mcadam...when I sell, I just have my preferences set so it doesn't allow bids from people who have any negative feedback or less than 5 feedback.

My problem with ebay is that I think the prices people are charging for shipping are out of control. They need to do something to fix that. I'm sorry but a PC game doesn't cost 9.99 to ship (and that's for Media!!!)! If you sell used items on Amazon, the shipping costs are set for the item. That's how it should be.

I totally agree!!! I mean your selling a shirt for $2.00 but $15.00 for shipping?? thats outrageous! I think most people dont notice the shipping, because I've had better luck selling something for $5.00 with $8.00 shipping then the same thing for $10 with $3.00 shipping. I just want what I think is fair for what I'm selling, I've never tried to rip someone off.

I used to be a time-hound, I still am from time to time if its something I really really want, but like you said now i just put my max and thats it.

I know..it's a major wtf. It's like they know the thing isn't worth anything and think they'll get it on shipping. Who knows...maybe they do, but not from me.

I don't know...I've noticed if there's a bunch of the same item, they all seem to be selling for the same price if you add the item cost and the shipping together. I try to go to as close to actual cost as possible too. Either way, it needs to be fixed.

Oh they do, you should see some of the things I see people bidding on without regards to the shipping. I know how much shipping actually costs (and i know you do have to cover your ebay selling costs as well), so if its not in that range sorry its a no go.

IMO, I think noone really notices the shipping. I always add the two together but I think (most) people see are "oohh thats only $2.00 let me bid on it". I don't think ebay will put any rules in place (to put a cap on shipping) for the more you sell your item for the more of a cut they get. I've tried to stop using ebay because I dont have money to pay them if my item doesnt sell.

lol..well, I guess there's no shortage of stupid people out there. Yeah, I haven't used it in a while either. If something is even close to being the cost of if I buy it new, I say forget it. As far as selling, I agree on the paying ebay when it doesn't sell.

My sister and girlfriend swear by Craigslist (sp?). I haven't checked it out, but they say you can get everything on there and you don't pay them.

I wasn't taking it personal, it is a system that works. I know what stuff is worth, and what I'm willing to pay, and (of course) I always look at the shipping and handling. BTW, the S&H charges are more of a bite into eBay's profits than ours, since they get a percentage of the cost of the item. Hence, you see a lot of $0.99 items with large S&H. I don't know what they've done, but I've been hearing that eBay has or is addressing the problem.

It's the same with any auction, if you are buying - the only bid you should make is the last one.

As far as postage goes, if the cost is not displayed, I 'contact the seller' and request the postage cost to my post code.

I only ebay at the moment for car parts (1967 HR Holden)
Without ebay some things are very difficult to find.

    Buyer beware

I only have gotten stuff off FleaBay using the Buy Now option. The guy I used to work for had a program that automated the sniping. He almost always won.

I agree about the shipping some places are charging. I used to buy online because it was cheaper and no sales tax. Now sometimes I buy locally to avoid the shipping fees...

Off topic slightly, but in 1992 I had the option of buying a HR Premier X2 sedan. As I was off to Africa to work, I turned it down. Damn. :cry :(

Used to love ebay, it's turning to :crap in my opinion. Just yesterday I received an email that there is well here it is (i hope) haven't had much luck with attachments lately
My feedback is 100 % have not purchased anything for over a year. They keep trying, their graphics used to be right on, not so anymore, looks like school kids are getting into it (the spoof mail)

Sellers move a good portion of the cost of the item to the shipping because it allows them to avoid paying fees if the actual bid is a higher amout. Lets say you were selling something that would end for $200. Knowing that if the final bid is $175 or higher means you pay more in ebay fees, you set the shipping price at $35, even if it it only costs $5 to ship. The final bid on your item will be lower, because the buyers will be compensating for the increase in shipping. So the auction ends at $170, you still get your $200 plus the $5 for shipping, and you pay less in fees to ebay. Thats why you'll see a $0.99 PS3 for sale with $499.99 shipping etc.. *Please note that my numbers were made up for the example. I have no idea where the actual price brackets are.

Exactly, otherwise your just driving up the price.

One of the issues i have with ebay is the feedback system. I am sure it is helpful in many ways and i always look at it before buying....But one thing that put me off the whole ebay thingy was when i bought a game. It was a brand new game, still in the wrapping. I won the auction and paid within 2 minutes of the auction finishing, using paypal. The disc came but it was faulty. I got all sorts of excuse's but the game was part of a series and all the other one's ran just fine. After another excuse, i had enough so gave negative feedback (1st time i had ever done that) and of course, straight away, negative feedback was given to me. I just cannot understand how you can be the perfect buyer (as i said, i paid within 2 minutes) and still get negative feedback, which looks bad for you as a buyer.

I believe you have the option to counter that with an explanation. I have looked at negative feedbacks and you can pretty much tell who the loonies are.

I've been pretty screwed over by a few people on ebay. Emails and questions sent but to no avail. So I filed a claim (with ebay first).

The reason I use paypal is when something like this happens, you can file a claim with paypal. Every time paypal has gotten my money back. I've left those individuals negative feedback but have no negatives of my own. I think when you put in an investigation to ebay, they either delete or don't allow the offending party to post feedback on you. Might not be true but then I dont understand why those who I gave bad feedback to didn't give me bad feedback:confused
