Educational time, Whats an RSS?

Hey Guys,

I`m seeing it alot lately since coming back online, but never checked it out till now.. what is it, when I click an RSS feed it just pops up a slew of code/xml stuff....

Mate I don't know the technical details of it all but, AFAIK, its an XML based system which communicates with an RSS feed reader on your machine. I have 2 RSS utilities that I am playing with. The extension for firefox (RSS ticker) and another one called Snarfer(stand alone).
Any RSS feed subscription you decide you want are handled by these apps and will inform you of updates to the sites you subscribe to. They only send down info which you haven't already received.

The guy who runs the game server I'm associated with uses an RSS feed to display new gaming maps added to the server and we can simply click the feed to download the new maps.

I am like you, very new to RSS but it does appear to be quite useful.

In a nutshell, it's a XML file which is designed to let third party applications monitor a source of news and syndicate content (thus the acronym, Really Simple Syndication).

My favourite application is to use a news reader program (such as FeedDemon) to monitor many different news sources without having to visit many sites individually.
