Hi guys. I have not been around for ages but you helped me so brilliantly last time.....

This is more of a niggle than major problem but I am confused...

I recently transferred to a new hard drive using a disc image and it all went perfectly... until last night when I used messenger for the first time in ages..

I use messenger 7.5 and have never ever had problems but last night it would not let me view any winks because it tells me Flash player needs updating (although it let me send them to others...)... so I click the link and it fails to install and tells me I need to go to the macromedia website and download it direct.... so I do that only to be told by the macromadia website that I already have the most up to date Flash player (8) !!! so I restart and go back to messenger and it tells me once again that I must update to flash player 8 !!!!

I am guessing that some security setting somewhere is preventing messenger from using flash player.... but I really dont know.

Can some kind sould tell me if this is a common problem and how I go about pointing messenger at the flash player that macromedia tells me I already have???

for info if required: WinXP SP2, Norton Internet Security 2006, MS Antispyware (I did try disabling that but nothing changed), MS messenger 7.5.

    Many thanks in anticipation

Hmm. Tricky. Have you tried re-installing MSN Messenger, and (completely removing, then) reinstalling Flash Player? I'm guessing that it's a registry entry somewhere that's awry.

Thanks for this and no in fact I have not tried that. I would like to avoid uninstalling messenger if possible...

so..... I have just tried uninstalling flash player.... and guess what??? Add/remove programmes lists macromedia flash player 8 and gives me the option to "change or remove" it... but nothing happens when I click to remove it....

so the current situation seems to be that control panel lists it as well but wont allow me to remove it!

    The plot thickens!!

Just for interest.... Ccleaner also cannot uninstall macromedia flash player 8 although once again it appears in the uninstall list!!

It is cedrtainly looking like Flash player itself is at fault.... can anyone point me in the direction of removing the obstinate little devil??

Many thanks for that... got it and did it no probs so now I dont have flash player on my machine......

So, now how do I re-download it??? No matter where I go it wont download.... clicking on links says something about I might need to click on "the gold bar at the top of the window"... which I cant see.... On other sites needing flash it tells me I need it then simply hangs on (presumably) the download page. Via download.com it takes me to the download page but the security window ("do you want to download...etc.") doesnt appear. I have tried other downloads and no problems... its just this darned flash player... what have I done???
I just bet this is something silly.... I have been into norton and into internet settings to make sure I am not blocking them completely and I am not. The thing is that even setting everything to "prompt" fails... I just dont get prompts!!!

I cant believe I am letting this get to me but so many websites use flash and I just cant get it !!

Any insights whatsoever would be extremely appreciated!!#

Hi all sorry for the delay but computer eventually gave up altogether and I had to restore!!!

I have dug a little deeper and this is what I have found (bearing in mind that computer seemed to have its nervous breakdown as soon as I uninstalled flash 8, I decided to leave it this time until I got more advice from you guys).

In "Add remove programs" Macromedia flash player 8 appears.

Messenger and websites all tell me that I dont have it!

Nick: I dont quite understand what you are telling me to do...sorry!!

I guess I can live without Flash 8..... but it is just so annoying that I cant track down which security setting is denying my computer the rights to use it!!! I cant play messenger winks on my computer yet I can send them to other users!!!
    *sigh*

Thanks for your efforts anyway guys!

Hi guys.... I have another update in case it shines any light.... I now note that on the flash player 8 download page it now tells me that it has succesfully installed flash player 6!!!

I am now pretty much convinced that as Nick has suggested (I think it was Nick) it is some obscure security setting that is blocking flash!! The really stupid thing is that I have it!!! It appears in add/remove programmes but it also appears that IE will simply not allow it to function!!! I have deliberately been to a few sites where other activex controls are required and I get the usual toolbar appearing asking if I want to continue.... but any site concerning flash and not even the "do you want to download....?" box appears!!

Nick could you reword you last suggestion because I cannot interpret it... I guess it was late and there are (I see) much more urgent cases than mine to consider.... in fact I would hope that all the poor guys with major probs come above me who is simply narked that he cannot send winks or get onto the new CSI3 game website !!!!! I will keep checking back and maybe bumping this thread if I find any more info.

I am still hopeful that it is simply a tick box I need to untick :)

    Hi!!

I thought you may want to hear this in case it helps someone else in the future!!!

I decided to ignore your advice since the first time I tried to go through the whole uninstalling proc for flash 8 I ended up having to restore from a disc image after PC had a nervous breakdown!!! I had given up all hope of ever using flash 8 and was prepared to wait for flash 9 in the hopes that it would be able to be installed!!

BUT...... yesterday I was offered WMP11 beta and since WMP10 had always been a bit of a moody swine on this new PC, I decided to give it a go in the hopes it would be more stable than WMP10 had been. It installed great and I have to admit it is a fantastic upgrade to have!!! So I went on to messenger to tell my friends.... and a wink appeared and worked from a friend..... I sent one back and it worked.....another friend sent me another succesful wink.... so I signed out and went to a few of the flash 8 sites
I had not been able to access....they all worked!!!

I swear that flash8 had still not been working and I had done absolutely nothing except upgrade WMP10 to WMP11 beta!!!

Go figure!!!! It looks like my faulty WMP10 had something to do with "holding back" flash 8....... is it possible guys???

Anyway, thanks as always for your attention and help!!

    Cheers!
