Perhaps directed at the wrong/incorrect sub-forum here (?), however, I need to blow a li'l STEAM(!!!), and am sooooo "F"-LUSTERED, I know not where else to "aim", at the moment.

I only seem to become further and further lost/left in the DUST (by the WEEK if not the Day/daily) in this increasingly tech-oriented world, and I KNOW (ofr a FACT) that I'm not alone in feeling ("KNOWING") this.

"ALL" (meaning; "MOST") technology very much appears to me, at age 51 years-of-age (and a "HIGH-MILEAGE" 51 at that), who has NEVER worked in the "TECH" industry ("NEVER", meaning and as in: "not EVER" - not 0.0001 micro-milli-MINI-NEW-YORK(or NEW DELHI for that matter)-nanosecond) to be of, for and BY . . . smallish 12-13 year-old people. WHAZ-UP WIT DAT??~!~??

EVERYTHaNG "seems" to be-coming smaller, more compact and further and further yet still - miniaturized. And yet, STILL, and here's the rub: "MOST" (meaning 99.56789%) of 12-13 yr-olds DEPEND 100% on folks MY AGE for the "FINANCE & FUNDING" to PURCHASE THESE FrEaKiN' "PROGS & PRODS" ... EH??

As well, despite all the "claims" otherwise and to the contrary - "OUR" machines come outta their respective boxes SLOW, and within a short period of time become s-l-o-w-e-r still ... until they are pretty much , ... . . . freeeeeeeEEEEEEEEZing-up (freezing-DOWN is more like it!) . . . w e t-r-yyyyyyy , butttttttt we get "BUGGED", to put it mildly, and NICE-LY. Are they "obsolete" in a month or four??? I'm beginning to think so. And Wall Street/MICROSOFT/APPLE WHOMEVER best wise-up to it. YOU ARE BURYING YOUR CUSTOMER-BASE FASTER THAN IT CAN BE REPLACED. That's simply STOOPIT - from a bi'ness standpoint!

Adding injury to insult (and/or insult to injury), "SOME" of us are in fact dealing with some form/degree/extent of "DIS-ability".

"WE" (the mouse in my pocket and ME) only need a very few things - PLEASE:

    1. "SECURE" technological products. Above and beyond ALL else. If it gets hacked/phished/wormed/"Trojan-ed" AND/or otherwise infiltrated, compromised and/or stricken SICK with a virus or by a FRIGGIN' BASTARD SPY, then what's the point of it ALL...AT ALL??? There is none. No point whatsoever. It is now broken PLASTIC...and everything is disposable any more, so , fuggedabowdit

    2. Performance. We're aging. We AIN'T GOT a whole buncha time remaining to "enjoy" this CRAP, er, I mean, this *stuff* : ) . "WAITING", beyond a CERTAIN point or pointS (plural) whislt EVERYTHING is "LOADING", searching/seeking/STALLING (darling) - has become untenable and acceptable.

Not to mention, "y-o-U", TOO, want things "FAST", well, then you're going to have to facilitate, and SHARE . . . everything...tips, pointers, programs/programming, bandwidth "energy - whateva'. ALL, of it - NOW, ...or As+S00N+As+F-ING+POSSIBLE~!!!~ (!?!)

    3. CLEAN-SIMPLICITY ~~~ often times SIMPLY means ENLARGED.

Move this thread or attack it to the point of SHREDDING - so be it ... A generation "GEN-BOOMA' / BOOMA'-GEN has SPOKEN. :major

Thanks "IN ADVANCE" - because despite claims (and "PROMISES"!?!) to the contrary - we do "NOT" have "more free ("leisure") time" ... we have less and less of of it (and I LOATHE this "modern" [new & "IMPROVED"???] "TOUCH-PAD" of/on my BRAND-NEW "NOTEBOOK" ... it "JUMPS" all OVER THE G-DAMN PLACE, which makes USING it NEXT-to-IMPOSSIBLE!!!?!!!) JEEEEEZ-US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...what gives people~?~

    Hehehe, I feel your pain.

#1) Just use MS's stuff to protect you or follow MG's guide in the malware forum. Just don't go and click on everything that pops up. If you don't know the person bthat sent you the e-mail then just delete it. %99 of safe surfing is you and of course instill that to your kids. No program can keep you %100 safe.

#2) Look at your startup folder and see what you don't always need, like anti-virus and firewall, you want to keep those.

#3) Look in Control Panel I believe to change the sensitivity of the touchpad if you want to use it. I personally hate them at any speed.

Have a cup of whatever floats your boat and come back.;) Been that frustrated too here.

Hi Glenn...I've moved this to the Lounge as it's not a support thread.

Honestly, I had a REALLY hard time reading it with all that excess punctuation and unusual spelling, but I think it's saying you are frustrated with computers and technology.

From reading a lot of your threads, I truly think you could cut out at least half of your frustration by just letting the computer run and making sure you have protection. Millions of people are oblivious to the all this stuff and just let their computers go and run them right 'out of the box'. There's nothing wrong with that.

Sorry you are frustrated. I do know the feeling.

    hi glenn,
in my experience, the reason for most speed lags, freezes, hanging programs has to do with an unnecessary multitude of start-up programs, services, and other things that run in the background that collide into each other and hog up resource while they are not even being used, this is just an idea, but if you can install Autoruns(sysinternals-microsoft)and post individual screenshots of logon, explorer, scheduled task, services, boot execute, winlogon tabs, you might get some advice on what you need or not,to have running all of the time.

A lot of people are under a whole heap of misconceptions when buying/using P.C.'s.
They are NOT just - install the O.S. and a few programs and they're good to go. They don't run themselves, or just 'work'. They are not smart or intelligent in any way. Having the latest equipment doesn't solve problems, if anything it adds to them - although the latest gear is cool, I'll admit.
Pistol is right, that most people do have way too many unnecessary programs and pending updates in their startup. Just having M.S. Messenger, Skype, and a few pending updates trying to do their thing will slow the P.C. down, especially at startup.
A few good safety measures gets rid of 99% of malware problems before they start. I haven't had an infection, (of the maleware type, LoL!) for years. There are a few forums and a heap of free experts here to guide one in this.
Looking at the history of P.C.'s, it has always been a domain of the hackers and experimenters and tech-heads. It's a lot less of that now, but it's still basically the same situation. If people want a machine that just works when they turn it on, and just use it for the 'Net' and playing games, I usually advise them that maybe a console might be more up their alley. Consoles do a fair bit besides games these days, but I don't bother with them, personally.
Hey Glenn, I am a year older than you, so I hear you on the age thing.;)

There is an old rule of thumb about getting a computer:

    1) Figure what tasks you want the computer to do.
    2) Find the software that will accomplish those tasks.
    3) Now find the hardware(computer) that supports the software.

Most folks seem to have a way of going about that rule of thumb in the reverse order. And the advances in hardware and software technology have lessoned that rule to a large degree. But sooner or later, the computer is tasked with performing something it was not originally configured for and it balks. Or maybe it's just some peace of sludgeware(OEM junk) getting in the way. Those technological advances aren't cheap ya know, but they are necessary to propagate the species.

When you're trying to solve a computer problem, tweak it, or other wise trying to improve it's performance, tackle each problem one at a time and break that problem down into steps(that's were MG comes in to play). Stick with it until it's solved then move on to the next. If you try to make to many changes at once and something goes wrong(invariable does), you won't know for certain where the problem is. So now you have to back track, alter, re-do, undo, etc. every thing and start all over. Now that's a waist of time. And what ever you were trying to accomplish in the first place is lost in a seeming blizzard of problems.

As for the knitting, personally it would drive me stark raving mad in short order, but it does seem to help relieve stress for a lot folks.

Hey as for age, I've several years on you, I've got time. Now, with a whole lot of help from the MG members, let's get this done! Right after you take a refresher course in relaxation.;)

    Hey all,

    I used to be (PRE-computers) a pretty-danged-good writer.

    In any event...

I am loathe to debunk theoretical conjectured (and guesses), but as usual, I think screen-shots tell a good bit of the story (and back me up) here.

The ONE thing most maddening (BY FAR) and causing the "greatest" brain-ACHE is the "mouse/touch-pad" PROBLEM.

One moment it's perfectly fine, and the for the next 10 moments it's virtually UN-controllable ... with one-hand anyway. And then that leads right into another set of problems, them (or at least ONE them) being ANEMIC-CPU-related, I am now "guessing" (?).

Backing-up, "it" (the pointer) "jumps" ALL-OVER THE PLACE!!??!!

I'm no "speed-typist", though I don't exactly "hunt & peck" either (recall I've never "typed"/word processed/etc. for any sort of living).

I look up/down for about 1/2 (during about half) of what I type...probably in the 40wpm range, "semi"-accurate (depending on a number of factors).

INVARIABLY, when my eyes got away from the screen, I'm guesstimating that now, about 1/4 of what I type has jumped to some other spot on the screen, or even just within the box that I'm working-on/in. EXTREMELY problematic, as then I am looking for "WHERE" it's gone-off to (now I'm "CHASING" the damned thing!???!), and then after finally finding it, cutting/pasting to take all the (now) misplaced/errant text BACK where it belongs.

I am not sure whether I can live-with this or not...I optical mouse is in store...SOON. this case)

I have trouble with my hands, due to multiple spine surgeries (cervical/neck in this case). I am CONSTANTLY "bumping" the wrong key/button/link/etc., though I am not certain that it's "always" ME...it seems like some sort of "static-electric" thing (for lack of a better understanding/explanation)?

Coupled with this often seems to be instances of the mouse NOT being able to "KEEP-UP" with me, as in the scroll and reset of the pointer, to a position to beginning typing again, or click-on a link, choosing/selecting a program, or button or whatever. I'm "there" (with fingers/keys/input) but the mouse has not caught-up, and the the page is (apparently) STILL loading - so I "CLIK", and simultaneously, the page "JUMPS", and now I've "selected" SOMETHING (??) that I had no intention of choosing/selecting, and being transported (slowly, though already loading now) to another "place" - and which is EXTREMELY problematic, when I'm on a site purchasing something, OR, having selected a DOWNLOAD LINK (or whatever!!!) that I had NO WANT, to choose/load (!!!???!!!). It's MADDENING, and makes me want to get SOOOO rip-roaring DRUNK, that I'd have NO business engaging with the www anyway.

I don't do most of the things which have been suggested that I may be doing - clicking on attachments in emails, suspect links, etc etc. (and Laura R. seemed the only one even vaguely familiar with my ... whatever.

I have FOUGHT for YEARS to keep my startups, and items in the taskbar-tray (bottom-right) to a MIN. I know these things...learned them years ago.

And I don't do a lot of "Starting-up" anyway, as I have always been much more "Sleep-prone" with my machines. I move to and away from them frequently, not being able to SIT (or sit-still) for long periods...instead working for an hour, maybe two, then walking-away for moments-minutes, or an hour or three - hence; Sleep-mode" is engaged (*Note, I have now gone back to "Hibernate" as I have had this Notebook for a month, and learned that it takes less energy [drains the battery much less] to Hibernate vs. Sleep).

What I AM "GUILTY" of is:

1.) Too many tabs open at one time (hard-habit to break).

2.) Too many Add-on's/Extentions/Programs/Apps/etc. Though I QUICKLY go-back, and Disable and/or Remove them at the first "hint" of trouble/issue/problem/IN-compatibility/bug/etc.

    So . . . ?

If I may take my own best "uneducated" stab at it, I'm thinking the CPU is SIMPLY NOT up to the task - of much (AMD "Vision" [ha, Vision], Dual Core, and (here's the let-down?) an anemic 1.6 GHz, and I'm used to my desktop which also has an AMD - Athlon-Dual-2.something or other (2.1 maybe?). It is simply faster, with Vista (Home-Basic), and a 32-Bit system.

TO be fair, the desktop has 3GB of RAM, and this Notebook here (with 7 Home Premium ~ 64-Bit) "ONLY" has 2GB, "today", but as soon as "we" can figure-out (in another - Hardware thread) EXACTLY what additional 2 Gigs to add (which will MAX-out the machine), I will add it - any HOUR now, I am hoping.

Sorry this ran so long . . . OH! The Screen-shots are:

    1. Startups in MSCONFIG
    2. Startups in 3rd-part software
    3. & 4. Were going to show some other things, but I "LITERALLY" can "NOT" control the mouse/pointer well-enough to get them to upload ... PATHETIC!!!
    4.
PS ~ I "ALWAYS" keep my machines "TOWNED-DOWN" - with old style, Windows Basic and "Classic" settings/display/appearance/graphics-usage.

I am "not" a "Gamer", so that's not an issue, and keep that one option box under "Performance" with ALL except ONE box UN-checked...that being "Smooth edges of screen fonts" (similar [or related?] to the "Clear-type setting, I reckon?)

It's 6am now...I've been up for HOURS 2 HOURS? 3 HOURS? trying to compose this ONE FREAKING post. PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to agree with Laura here, while we've all had frustrating times with PC's etc, if you require help and advice but also want to rant, the best thing to do is start a thread explaining your exact issues and hardware info along with OS and what you are hoping to achieve.
THEN start another thread containing your rant.

This way your ranting thread will be filled with amusing horror stories from us which helps take away your frustration knowing you are not alone and probably end up having a laugh.
While that is happening those in your "help" thread will be trying to pin-point the issue and help you fix it.

Combining the 2 together creates a confusing read and loses focus of what you need help with.

I also agree with Laura that by the sounds of thing you are thinking way too much about things that don't make much difference.
I run a high end PC now, I've had lots of slow PC's and feel your frustration, but a simple setup of security progs and progs you NEED to be installed, will help your PC run at it's best.
Instead of fighting with MSconfig/startup , look at whats in there, shut the progs down from the prog itself or uninstall it. MSconfig/startup should be a last resort for those progs that will not allow you to have them boot when you want instead of with windows.
Alsi 2GB of RAM is low for WIn7 64bit. Upgrade that, although I'm surprised a PC loaded with Win7 only comes with 2GB RAM.

Anyway, I hope you solve your issues and as for the frustration, think like I do.... We are man, we build everything man made, therefore we are better than that which we build, a computer can do many things.... ask it to turn a door knob.... then realise it can't do anything without you, you are it's master and with correct treatment and use it will do what you want it to for the most part.... also remember it is YOURS to protect.

By the way, things aren't getting smaller.... you should see my new heatsink :-D

I did, I have and I did and I have again and again - and still have problems here.

I "did" start another thread. I simply FORGOT, (in being OVERWHELMED here by the great almighty technology) to include screenshots in the original thread here... which I ("again" - "DID") in the new thread there.

I feel as if I'm being called a LIAR here!!!???!!! Things ARE getting smaller "FOR ME" - I've gone from a 19" monitor on a desktop to a 12 (.1)-inch NOTE-book...EVERYTHING is NOW "smaller". I'm "not" typing these things because I have nothing better to do! I'm "not" making-up stories to amuse myself or anyone else ... I'm "not" simply making-these things up.

What I "AM" doing is STRUGGLING my rear-end OFF here, and t feels to me as if folks are making jokes about it...and about me.

It's looking more and more every day now as if I've made a several hundred dollar mistake that I could not and can not AFFORD to make!!!!

I think I mentioned disability...and the LOW pay involved with that...I'm thinking I need to just shove the business-end of my 9mm in my mouth, blink, squeeze, and forget about it all.

People say they "have me in age" (sounds like my grandfather talking)...I'm glad for that or sad for you or whatever you might wish me to be, but I bet you've been doing this stuff a lot longer, or work in some sort of tech business - or at least work with a computer on your job...? I've been a laborer all my life - of one sort or another. Never worked in an office (once, for a few months when I was injured) - never worked with computers, so I don't have much practical experience.

Folks LOVE to throw the word "RANT" around on the www...which to me, seems to make it sound as if I'm on the warpath...or out to "get" someone...nothing further from the Truth - I'm basically BEGGING for HELP. The only one I might "come-after", and "get" iss myself...

THE FREAKING "MOUSE" (TOUCH-PAD - WHAT-EVER IT'S CALLED) CONSTANTLY JUMPS ALL OVER THE SCREEN!!! WHAT THE HELL IS "THAT" ALL ABOUT OH TECHNO-WIZARD WHO INVENTED IT, AND IS (OR COULD BE IF HE/SHE WANTED TO BE) LOUNGING ON A WARM SHORE SOMEWHERE, AND WE'VE GOT WINTER COMING IN THE MOUNTAINS HERE, A FARM AND 110 YEAR-OLD FARM HOUSE TO DEAL WITH - DISABLED, AND NO REAL "HELP"...NOT THAT I CAN "AFFORD" ANYWAY.

DAMN-IT, I DID "NOT" want to "go-there" with this, but as I don't know what to do anymore here with my tech "issues", this (what is appearing to be a HUGE mistake (THIS dreaded machine/computer), how do I get through to anyone??? I'm telling you, I've been around here for YEARS, and things HAVE gotten SMALLER, MORE complex and more complicated - for ME!!! It's no "JOKE" ... it is "NOT" a joke, to me.

I have NEVER seen more "assumptions" made and conclusions drawn in my life as I do in internet forums...not just here, but ALL forums (and I utilize QUITE a few of them) - I am "not" and do "not" "USE" msconfig...I SIMPLY TOOK A SCREENSHOT FROM IT TO SHOW MY STARTUPS. Is no one seeing that I've DONE 90% of what is being suggested...I'm talking about (or at least I think/thought I was talking about) "accessibility" issues ... not security or viruses/worms/etc. My MOUSE STAYS out of control...it jumps all over the screen...i cannot scroll without scroll taking-over itself, and flying right past where I need to stop on pages, except for when I need it to go fast and far up or down a page - AND THEN IT "CRAWLS"???!!!???, as if the machine is broken-down, or breaking-down...old, and used and tired and worn-out - - - MY GOD THE MACHINE IS A MONTH OLD!!! I CAN'T COME HERE ANY MORE IF FOLKS ARE GOING TO MAKE LIGHT OF MY SITUATION/CIRCUMSTANCES, AND TECH PROBLEMS. I'm not asking for help on the farm, or with my broken-down old vehicles, but with TECH issues! Isn't what this place is FOR, and ALL ABOUT???

The 9mm is looking more and more my "solution", as I am not finding..or not seeing, any others...........

    Thanks,
    glenn

Ya know, since you already reset back to factory condition and still have the the same issue then I'd assume it's a hardware related issue. If your warranty has expired then I'd try and reduce the pad/mouse sensitivity first(I may be repeating myself here). Otherwise I'd send it back to wherever you bought it.

Also, your CPU/RAM combo should be able to handle whatever you currently use the machine for, 2GB RAM is plenty(sorry people;)) as I ran W7 perfectly on a relatively slow (3800+) dual core with 1GB so that's not your issue. People are assuming they need more power but they really don't. Heck, I used to transcode a lot of video which needs lots of power and would bring my single cored 3000+ to its knees. When I installed my dualie, I wouldn't even know that video was transcoding in the background!

Anyways, I agree with Laura and Ned and this will be my last techie post in here.:) As to age, I'm pushing 60 so that has nothing to do with it.;)

Was it one of those huge Zalmann monstrosities?(sorry as I don't remember)

Take a few deep breaths my friend. :)
Take a look at the screen shots. I can't decipher what is enabled or disabled. Expand the tab so we can understand.
First shot, elements of Comodo are disabled but can't see what is or not? What is the second MS entry enabled??

    Now we are also confused.

Second shot CIS is disabled altogether? As is MSC??! I'm presuming it relates to MSE?
Relax you will get it sorted out. :) Stick with the support forums.

    Cheers..

PLease - I will beg if I have to for my 10-year-old...who I HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF, AND PROVIDE FOR!!! I have grandkids - 3 - two girls and a boy - who I love, and who love me...I need to help them too - and I'm STUCK here NOW...My God, I didn't buy the BEST PC in the world, but I didn't buy the worst either. IT'S ONE MONTH OLD??? I guess I screwed-up getting such a WEAK CPU, I don't know??? I begged with questions about the Best $400 laptop/notebook before I bought it - I begged when I first got it, saying "PLEASE" I HAVE TO do this one "RIGHT", this time - for once...I begged in these threads and forums for help, and sure enough - i've got problems here with this now...yet again, as always, and I really feel like I BEGGED for help with it all.

I got "7" that EVERYONE said was so much better than Vista - I got Home PREMIUM, for once - "NOT" the "starter" or "Basic" as I did with BOTH XP AND Vista.

I got 2gigs of RAM, and have been looking for a month, and BEGging for help here, to move up and MAX it out to 4gigs . . . and hyet still nothing concrete.

I got the "Better" ("GREAT", for ME!) Graphics - Radeon 6310 - which to me is a CADILLAC, or Lincoln or Mercedes or whatever???!!!?? The 8-hour LLI-ION battery, dual core, what else??? I dont know, but I did the bets that I could, and seems I've been DUPPED yet again...???

I open too many tabs at once, and I ...i dont know - i can't even recall my other "sin" right now, not right off the top of my head!!???!! I do NOT play games. I USE MSE MSSE - MS Security Essentials - anti VIRUS AND anti- Spy geeeeeez - my God, I DID go with the Comodo FW so I guess I'm hell-bound now???!!!??? I've "asked"...and asked, and asked, and asked - BEFORE I got a new machine, and since - with NOT much response. But now that I'm having serious trouble - folks are coming outta the woodwork...with jokes, and to tell me to do things I already do...and to not do things that I don't do...making me the butt of jokes...and a laughing-stock...well, enjoy me now, while ya can... i SURELY can't take much of this...not here...not any more

Like I said, bring it back! Your CPU is not weak for what you do! You just got the rotten apple from the barrel so just return it and have them REPLACE IT!!!

BTW, only one person made a joke since this is the lounge. I don't see how you can feel slighted when people are trying to ignore your frustration and really are trying to help. Take a deep breath or three and calmly explain your issues to the clerk or whomever you bring it back to. I can't put enough emphasis on this point. No company has %100 working units shipped. I read and read and read about this notebook...a number of people mentioned the the touchpad was "bad" "awful" "terrible" whatever. Having not owned a laptop previously I didnt understand the extent of that...the full implication.

I suppose I can try a regular mouse first...USB, correct?

    .

It is unfortunate you feel that way. I don't think that is the case at all. I think everyone has been trying to help you...now and in your other support threads.

Your first post led me to believe you were just venting your frustration at computers and technology therefore I moved this to the Lounge. This seems to have turned back into a support thread.

First...I have a question for you: Augie suggested taking it back. If this is an option, there is no reason why this shouldn't be your first step. If the laptop is defective or has had these issues from the start, this is what you should do. If I recall correctly, it was not long ago you got this. You should have some sort of warranty on it.

Second...have you phoned support? This is usually also an option depending on your warranty.

As far as this thread...rather than move it back over to software, I am going to ask you to post separately for your issues/questions you would like to pursue. It looks like you have some threads going. I didn't look at all of them so don't know if you have resolved some.

Do you have one started for your Mouse issue? I see you have one here for what looks like a question regarding an external mouse: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=226102&highlight=mouse This seems to be a different issue though.

Well, I was going to suggest you use a regular, (USB) mouse, but I thought that you would 'prolly think I was being 'pedantic' again. Seriously, I have come across many, many laptop and Notebooks that have very sucky Touchpads and/or drivers. That's why I usually use a regular mouse, (which is way better for my big 'Shrek' hands, anyway!)
Yeah, we are trying to help, believe it or not, but I have no idea what your P.C. habits may, or may not be, so sorry if I get it wrong. If that's the case, then we will try other things until the problem is licked.
I've been doing I.T. work since the eighties and never had a problem that was truly unsolvable.;)
And yep, I agree that if R.M.A. or similar is an option, then that should be done. Maybe you were just unlucky in this. It happens.

What manufacture is the laptop? I know that Toshiba has the combo of Control + F9 to disable the touch pad so you can use a wireless mouse instead. My wife had the same issue with the touch pad and the curser moving as if by magic to strange places as she typed, so we got a wireless mouse for her and disabled the touch pad. That made a world of difference for her.

Excellent info Tim as my gf just got a Toshiba. I'm just waiting for her to come running at me for help.:-D Didn't even ask me what I thought about whatever model she wanted before buying it, WTF?:confused All I know ATM is that it cost $450 CDN and she'll be most likely leaving soon.-D

Tell me about it!:-D I don't mind as she's just a platonic gf for these last 7 years, though it's been good times.;) I just don't get it?:confused I sit at this machine for half the day! Wouldn't she think that I actually have a clue?

Heck, it took me 5 years to convince her to upgrade her RAM to 1GB from 256K for $50 bucks! Then she tells me 'Wow, that's fast, why didn't you tell me before?!' Well duh?rolleyes Anyways, she's not stupid as she's an RN, might be pissed off at me for whatever reason it is this time.:-D A really nice lady otherwise.:)

Ok, I would just like to reply with this.

1: I don't think anyone is calling you a liar, I certainly wasn't. My joke about size was because I need to keep buying bigger cases as PC parts ARE getting BIGGER. As for your issue, again I wasn't calling you a liar but reading your post was tricky to understand what your exact issue was/is and I was simply saying seperating the info makes it easier for people to help you. I did not realise you have been in the tech forums for help.

2: I've been playing with computers for about 8-9 years, up until 2 weeks ago always with old technology just wishing I could afford newer stuff.... hell I just made a thread about my spending $1000 on new parts only to find out my graphics need upgrading... but I can't afford that.
Am I in the tech field?... I do repairs as a very small part time job.
I've never had a desk job, since the age of maybe 10 and then at 15 when I finished school I have worked in a couple of corner stores but most of my time has been spent heavy labour in construction and a few years crab fishing which as I'm sure you know is not exactly a lightweight job. I now sell shoes because my back can no longer take the punishment and if I continue I will probably end up with very little use of my back before I'm 40.

Since you mentioned you figured I/we are jumping to conclusions I will send that right back to you sir, just because someone knows about PC's more than you do does not mean they have spent thier life sitting behind a desk.

All I was trying to do was offer some simple advice and trying to lighten your mood, clearly that was taken as me making fun of you/your situation.

So I apologise for anything I said you took offence to, was not my intent.

As for your PC issues, I hope you find a solution quickly and get back to enjoying your product.

And remember 1 thing, this forum prides itself on members who are light hearted, helpful and somewhat polite.... except when talking about toilet humour :-D
But I'm sure you already know that ;)

    Good luck :)

Thanks to everyone, but omGOSH!!!?!!! I don't know who to answer first about what??

"Phantom" I'm nort sure what "R.T.M." is (return to manufacturer?).

    And Tim, it's an ASUS...

Sorry for being so up-tight/dramatic whatever...I was (am??) just at a boiling-point, and this PC is just the tip of the "TI-glenn-TIC'S's" proverbial iceberg...just a LOT hitting all at once...and when "Health" (rather, some significant LACK thereof/Med-"issues") become the biggest part of the mix or equation ("equation" ... is that the word I wanted...? Oh well...), well ... there simply seems no "out" ... . . . . . . . ..

But hey no problem...CHRISTMAS is right around the corner....

I'll get a USB mouse asap. And if I ever get the RAM situation figured -out here, well, I think I need to take a "break from browsers", etc., for "some" time.

My late 40s/early 50's were NEVER ever supposed to be ANYTHING LIKE this. The odd thing is I've had more (MUCH more) stress/pressure/etc. before...plenty of times It's just different now...I'm not exactly sure how, or "why", but I know it is...very, VERY much so.

And it (the internal, psychological...indeed, physiological *STUFF*!!!) is literally, causing me physical illness.

I'm "Lt. Dan" more than ever now. . .

    Thanks again, all... . . .

I know your pain about the touch pads built into laptops. I had to do a restore on my mother HP something or other. One of the drivers it couldn't find was for the synapis (??) touch pad. Seeing as she had a usb mouse I never bother tracking down the drivers (would be easy enough I figure.) She complained about it not working even though she doesn't understand how to move the slide switch to make it work, I told her to always have a AA battery in the charger ready to go and not to give it another thought.

Stick with it, one day things like this won't even cause a second though.

In the thread Bought New Notebook - Need to Handle things PROPERLY from the Beginning FOR ONCE you say it's an ASUS Eee PC 1215B-PU17-SL

I did a Google search for asus eee pc 1215b touchpad problem site:notebookreview.com and there is a long thread at www.notebookreview.com about it, I read a few posts but just looking at the first 2 Google results is enough to get an idea that the TouchPad has been a problem for some (many?)
    https://www.google.com/#sclient=psy...a19a7dbbc4fd3c&biw=1024&bih=490&pf=p&pdl=3000
“how is your touchpad holding up? ... my first 1215b because of the horrible touchpad, screen problems”
“I also had the touchpad issue that many 1215b users are experiencing”

When I Google search asus eee pc 1215b touchpad site:forum.eeeuser.com there is the long thread 1215N touchpad behaving crazily but I don't know if it is the same problem as your 1215B because www.forum.eeeuser.com is down at the moment according to www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com
But in the Google results some people write
    https://www.google.com/#sclient=psy...a19a7dbbc4fd3c&biw=1024&bih=490&pf=p&pdl=3000
“Well, I just received my Asus Eee PC 1215B in the mail 3 days ago. I also noticed the trackpad problem”
“bought the 1215b yesterday.. same issue with the touchpad”

If it were me, I would send it back and get it fixed or a replacement.
I love using the Touchpad and my usb mouse sits on the desk gathering dust but that's not really the point. I accept that I didn't buy "top of the line" but I expect it to work and if it doesn't work I want one that does work! <insert stern emoticon here>
I know getting a replacement and having to start again can seem like a daunting task but it really is quite easy, in another thread I wrote
By the way, I am in my 50s and got my first computer about 2 years ago, I only know the basics of keeping it safe and clean and some software to make using things easier, simpler and better organized but that's enough. Faster is also good but only if it's trouble free, I'm in no rush to step in the "you know what"
In my youth I stood in queues at various Poste Restantes just to get a letter from home, now I meet many young ones who complain their email page takes more than 10 seconds to load :cry it seems they have never had to wait long for anything. But that's ok, I accept the changes that have come and realize communication was slower still before mail services and Poste Restantes so in that sense I was lucky.
If the young ones complain to me about slow internet I just shrug and tell them “Instant coffee is, making a cup of instant coffee isn't”
They usually give me a weird look but at least they stop complaining to me about it ;)

Good luck whichever way you go :)

I guess the how depends on you. Only things that you let bother will bother you. I used to tweak, tweak, tweak my windows machines until I had so many services stopped and down to one start up item. This comes from the days of only having a 133mhz 512 meg of ram machine when every little thing mattered. I did this to my current machine (Q9550 - W7) and noticed not a single improvement other then a few seconds faster boot time. I say to not sweat 'sorting things out.' I say step back, make sure you are 100% updated (windows, java, flash, and whatever else you use) get a firewall, anti virus that YOU are comfortable with, not what others want you to use. As asking someone about that is like what is the best truck, you will get chevy, ford and dodge then there is the person who walks into the room and yells Toyota/Nissan/Honda. Then take things one step at a time. Whittling down your startups. Then *maybe* stopping some windows services if you feel the need to (indexing, etc) When you go changing many things at once and a problem comes up what you going to blame? One thing at a time, wait a day and make sure no ill effects come about then move to the next. When I crossloop into someones computer I have to stop myself from killing all their start up items, I forget that not everyone will do java, quicktime, flash updates as I would so I generally leave them there. 2 gig of ram I would guess would be enough with what you are doing, I don't believe you are encoding video or the like.

One step at a time and breath in between them.

ernalThank you all...very much. You (all) help me..greatly.

Quick question RE: Tim's ink (to anyone, I suppose) for 'disabling the TouchPad'...

Does anyone know if I should, perhaps, wait to do this until "after" I get an external mouse up and running - or could that possibly cause a conflict?

My concern is (or would be), if I disable the touch-pad first, and then have problems with the USB/external mouse, is it at all possible that I could "lose" access the to the original "mouse/pointer" configuration - and the reactivation of it, please?

    Thanks in advance ... . . .

Personally I wouldn't disable the touchpad at all, as you can have both touchpad and mouse control working simultaneously without any conflict. Touchpads can be amazingly sensitive, causing the cursor to move at the merest contact, and as they are located in front of the keyboard it's so easy to brush it when typing. Your problems may have been caused by such accidental contact, however light.

If, once you have a working mouse, you find you have no need for the touchpad, or it is still causing cursor problems, that would be the time to disable it. Personally though I always keep both active, not least because wireless mice suffer battery failure regularly and I don't want to suddenly find myself mouseless.

Using a touchpad successfully does take a little practice but I found, once I had used it for a while, that I would use it in preference to the mouse.

Grc123.………………all I can tell you is that we have been using a laptop for the last 3 years ( only because of necessity because I prefer a big old desktop) and I have always used an external mouse, (along with other equipment) hooked to a usb hub which is then connected to the laptop. Shortly discovered what a nuisance the touchpad had become and disabled it….been fine ever since.

If you disable the touchpad permanently but then something goes wrong with your mouse you will have to go find another mouse or try using keyboard shortcuts to navigate to the place where you can enable the touchpad again.

Asus Support FAQ: How do I disable the touchpad on my Eee PC?
There are 4 options, this is the one I would suggest because you can just press Fn+F3 again to enable your touchpad if needed.

The problem I had with the touchpad was the "Tapping" feature. (The touch pad acts like the left button) This may be what is causing your grief grc. You can turn it off. My Toshiba laptop is XP, newer platforms may be similar. "Control panel/ Mouse/ Device Settings/ Settings/ Tapping (click on tapping, not the + sign). Uncheck "Enable Tapping". Click ok.
Then just use the left button as regular.

I also use a wireless, but since I made this change, I use the pad much more.
    (I'm also over fifty;))

Thank you all ... very much.

There is, or can be, little, if any doubt, that I had absolutely allowed the tech to get the best of me here.

Things have settled-down a good-great bit here now...and the "secret", or "trick" this time, has been the very same as it's been all-along...from the very first time I learned it...the very same little "secretive trick (ha).

The BIG "secretive-trick" is almost TOO simple...and it is, simply, to s-l-o-w down . . . and take things "logically" (or as "near" to logic as I may wrest!).

I am happier now ... actually have a back-up (used) desktop mouse connected to this new machine, WHICH, by-the-way, I have actually learned (as a directly result of slowing the whole process down) is actually a "NET-Book", and not the NOTE-Book which I had been thinking ("KNOWING"!), and referring to it as.

    Imagine that . . . :) :-o rolleyes :-D

Wow, thank you for this...I somehow missed it the other night, so am just now seeing it. Naturally though, it appears, things are different in "7" - I will post screen-shots...not sure how to proceed? I have a feeling there's a clear difference between you Toshiba a/XP and this little ASUS w/7.

Great - thank you sir...this may be a case here where my inSIStence upon reverting displays and such to earlier versions of Windows ("Classic", "Standard", etc.) is costing me needed functionality.

This has always been my practice in efforts to save any hit on performance that I possibly can (I cannot afford the latest/greatest systems/equipment/connection speeds).

I will attempt to get it back (display screens) into the more modern form, and hopefully get it together here ... thanks very much, GREATLY appreciated

You've got some great advice all 'round grc from MG members...for my 2 cents worth, I keep things pretty simple for my personal laptop which was top of the range when I bought it years ago (still has many things some new PCs don't have). It now is very old but still running in top order with the original hard drive, because I've maintained a strict housekeep discipline.

There are some good free tools out there you can use to help you keep your system running clean and sweet without freezing.

Here's my ongoing To Do list (probably a repeat of what others have stated; and I expect only a few people housekeep as regularly as I do.;)

    Upon finishing use of computer:

    1. Delete browsing history before closing browser
    2. Clean disk
    3. Use "shredder" to permanently get rid of junk and any unnecessary files

    Upon starting computer

    1. Check for and update apps, particularly for viruses, because new ones came out daily, etc (and for those apps that aren't on automatic update).
    2. After all updates completed, restart computer
    3. Thoroughly housekeep and clean disk to get rid of redundant/unnecessary files/folders, junk files, cache, cookies, etc, include registry clean (your computer may already have a clean disk facility; or there are apps that will do this safely)
    4. Defrag and optimise (I do at least weekly)
    5. Check disk to find and fix errors (I do fortnightly/monthly).

It rarely freezes, if it does, I've found it needs a thorough clean up and CheckDisk, then it goes like a whiz once more.

While I'm still enjoying the use of my old buddy, I'm planning on getting a new laptop mainly for extra power, capacity and the new technology because soon my current laptop's technology will no longer be supported.:)

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers

    LS
