Email virus/malware, no internet connectivity

    My wife tried to open an attachment from one of those " You have missed your UPS delivery" emails about a week ago. When I found out I updated and ran malwarebytes getting rid of 32 infections. Everything seemed to run fine.

    The next morning after the computer had updated and reset, there was no more internet access. The AT&T self support tool says our TCP/IP network stack has been corrupted. I did a system restore and chose the only available date which was that morning and still no changes. I then ran malwarebytes again before heading to this site. This is why there is a slight variation in the cleaning steps... (Malwarebytes then Superantispyware) The Malwarebytes scans added are those listed above.

    Also, the Java installer "cannot not proceed with the current Internet Connection settings." so I skipped that step.

    Three other computers were connected to the same router, two wifi and one not. None of these have been affected. Computer is running at about one forth its normal speed when doing tasks like loading add/remove programs list
    and the connections under network connections have disappeared.

    Thank you in advance.

    1. Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

    2. SystemLook

    Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
    Download Mirror #1
    Download Mirror #2

    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :filefind
      ndis.sys
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
    Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

    3. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    4. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    adee
    paemjyqu

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\_r_a_p_.tmp
    c:\windows\system32\adee.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\paemjyqu.sys

    Registry::
    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "DWQueuedReporting"=-
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}\NoExplorer]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      [IMG]

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    5. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the new log from SUPERantispyware and systemlook.

    6. Tell me how the PC is behaving now, please.

    Here are the logs, I get a JRE error in another language on startup. Because Java was uninstalled? I'll up a screenshot in another post.

    Internet still down. Load times on browsing and apps are fine. Add/Remove Programs still hangs for about 45 seconds before saying it's loading a list. Aside from that and the net it feels like it's running fine.

    I just figured out the internet problem. All my network adapter drivers are AWOL. I'll dig those up on this other computer and transfer them over. Computer still hangs for a moment doing windows specific operations like the add/remove programs or using the run command in the start menu. Maybe from that last Windows update?

    1. What are these files seen residing in the windows folder? I have only listed a few, but there are many of them.

    2. Now we need to use ComboFix

    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Fcopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\ndis.sys | c:\windows\System32\drivers\ndis.sys

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\post.txt

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\Services\WINIO]

    Scratch that last post by the way, I jumped the gun. The network adapter drivers all have exclamation points by them in Device Manager but the files and drivers are still there and can't be uninstalled/reinstalled to restore net access but you probably already knew that.

    My wife is a midwife and has various programs on the computer used for processing and filing birth and death certificates. That's probably what those are. If you want me to dig deeper for future reference I can get the names of the softwares for you. Off the top of my head I think they are Electronic Registrar and Collaborate MD.

    After Combofix the computer won't start in normal mode. I had to use safe mode to get on and get the reports. Should I start system with last known working configuration?

    Also I ran that MGtools getlogs twice cause the mp3 player I was using to transfer the files just choked on me mid transfer of the logs and I had cut that one instead of copying it.

    I'm afraid any issues surrounding drivers and internet connections will have to be resolved in another appropriate section of the forum as only malware removal is dealt with here in this forum, and from what I can see, no malware exists in your logs now.

    Worth just asking your wife to verify that she knows about those files I asked about. Doesn't hurt to be absolutely sure. :)

    So what exactly happens when you try to boot normally? Describe it to me. What happened after combofix was ran. Did you receive any error messages, or did it just reboot the machine and now you are only able to get on through safe mode/safe mode with networking?

    If you still cannot boot normally then yes, do indeed try LKGC. Let me know.

    After combofix ran it said it had to reboot the computer to finish. Upon reboot the computer said it hadn't shut down properly and gave me the normal/safe mode options. I picked normal which stuck it in a loop resetting every time after the loading windows bar. I just tried it with last known good configuration and I get the same. It only fully boots on safe mode.

    I have spoken to Chaslang and we have a few things to try. :)

    There is also something else we can try so let me know how you get on with the above.

    I started a system restore which hung with zero progress for 30 minutes so I did a hard shut down on the computer and it is booting up normally again. Whooda thunk?

    That's great! :) Very good news. Now, I am gearing up to give you final steps as I did not see any malware in your last logs. All is still well I trust?

    Yes ma'am

    OK, then you can follow the steps below. :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
