I have Windows Mail as an email client. It is too long a story to explain why I am limited to that one without paying.
I have 3 accounts for one.
.EML files are outdated and I feel should not be used.
I think my client is causing me to be involved with this format at times as it is akin to Hotmail and works with Outlook Express.
Thunderbird opens them but I am not savvy enough to use Thunderbird.
Likely I do not totally understand these files but just do not want them in my life. They are particularly make trouble when I am involved with photos.
Another example of lack of compatibility is Apple. It can be a problem too if the sender does not set a photo to 'compatible".
So is there a way to avoid .EML files under these circumstances?
    TY

At times .EML files give me trouble viewing them in my external drives as I mentioned.
I did convert .EML to .Jpg 3 out of 5 times by forwarding and using the drop down to Jpg. I cannot remember how I did it.
If I had a different client than Windows mail I would not deal with .EML. Jpg is easier and more widely acceptable in my opinion.
I have read that this extension is antiquated but that seems to be debatable.
I guess it is somewhat like Internet Explorer being ready to expire or not.
However, I thank you all for your very informative information which I will study.

The real issue here is not your email file format, it is that you are using the older POP3 email system whereas these days most ppl use IMAP. IMAP does not transmit emails as files so doesn't use .EML at all. I guess you are still using Vista to be using Windows Mail and although Vista is a very old system it can handle IMAP accounts just fine. Read about the differences here -

I am up to date with Windows 10 20H2. I have a MS account, Comcast one, Gmail one and an Apple one which I do not include in the client. I have read about Comcast and maybe they are the POP 3 one.
Windows Mail and calendar comes with Windows 10.
Thank you for the link, I will read about it.
I think one of the times I was successful in converting .EML to .Jpg was when I involved Comcast which is both POP3 and IMAP.
I must make sure I have IMAP and not POP3.

    I solved this finally for my purposes;
An EML file is an old email message converted into a file. To change to Jpg = open the .EML file, then right click the picture inside only, choose save as and choose drop down to Jpg then click save to desktop or wherever you choose..

Note - the picture is embedded within the file so need to open it before saving as.

I heard you can also have the file sent as an attachment but am not sure.

I did watch mail store on YouTube. It is a fantastic program for those who heavily email such as businesses. Thank you for the referral.
