Empty Extraction from HJT Zip File

I'm infected with the WinFix spyware. I have done all the cleaning as described, and am trying to follow the instructions for the Vundo fix. But I'm stuck at the download-HJT stage.

I've set up the folder as described, and extracted to it. (I have Extraction Wizard, and it says that extraction was successful). But when I open the extracted files, the folder is empty.

I've tried several times now, and can't seem to get any contents from the Zip file -- if there were any in there to start with.

Can I get some help, please?

Update: My (outdated) McAfee virus scan informed me of the following:

C:\DOCUME~1\DAVIDF~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe was infected by the W32/Generic.worm!p2p virus and has been deleted.

I then ran the (outdated) McAfee virus scan and it found this worm three times -- "unable to clean" message. But I was able to delete them.

    Please help.

And, since a) I don't know what I'm doing other than following the instructions around here; and b) I'm about to give up . . . .

Would it be easier for me, a novice, to just wipe everything out and reinstall my operating system (Dell, Windows XP), than to continue to try to win this fight?

Thanks a bunch for any help.

First, you need to uninstall the out dated McAfee because this is a false detection and will continue until you remove McAfee. After you uninstall please follow the below steps:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifAfter doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:
