I think I contracted a virus on my PC; Norton isn't finding it, however I am pretty sure I removed it manually. I found the file on the hard drive and deleted it, so it's gone unless there is a second copy that I can't find. Either way, I am left with a PC (running Windows XP corporate) that won't let me open task manager, edit the registery, or run msconfig, and I'm sure there is other things. Assuming I got rid of the virus, which I think I did manually, how do I reenable these things? I don't know where the option to enable or disable them are.

I have only two accounts on here, one is the admin account, and the other is the only user account and it has admin priveledges.

    Help!

You did not give us a virus name. And you did not tell us what file names you removed. That would be useful information.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis

That is because I didn't ask anything about the virus, I asked how to enable editing the registry and task manager. I know, this is a windows question, but when I posted in software, everyone yelled at me to post here. Like I said, I believe I got rid of the virus, I don't need advice on the virus, just need someone to point me to where the option for enabling or disabling task manager or editing the regsitery is.

There are on the order of a dozen or more viruses that disable the programs you are mentioning. You need to run what I requested.

If you want help, you need to follow directions or we will not be able to help you.

Your problems may even be that the malware deleted or modified some of your required system files.
