encrypt me baby

Ever since I got this new Laptop and I have been afraid of losing it, or it getting stolen. I really do not want someone putting the details of my life out there or stealing my cc info.

I found this 60 day trial of datalock which I read a PC Mag (search: pc mag datalock) review of and they liked it:

My question is simple, how do I test it?

I get it, encrypt my data, and then how do I make sure it is working?

That's a good question. If you have to use a password to access your data, then it's working. But I know what you mean, it's not like you can look at the data in it's encrypted state to verify that the data is actually encrypted.

Hi

What Windows version do you use as some as in various versions of Vista or Windows 7 do come with Bitlocker and that will do what you need.

Their are other apps and TrueCrypt is a free and good one, I use this on a netbook of mine.

To test it, give your or hand out PC over to a friend, turn it off and then tell them to start it up and open a specific file of yours, could be a word doc or image that you know you have saved, see if they can open that said file.

But any encryption is controlled by a password and its best to use a strong password, someones name or a pets name is not good enough you have to employ the techniques of using random characters for alphabetical letters so say majorgeeks is m4j0rg33k$ or another is to use something rememberable as in if you have a fav music/writer use their name and a track/book as an all in one word, eg. the_beatles_hey_jude
