Encrypt Wireless Router

I tried to do this myself but can't seem to figure it out.

I bought a wireless (Netgear WGR614v9) to connect my laptop and my desktop at the same time. My co-worker set it up for me as I couldn't figure it out. A while ago, something (I don't know what) happened and I couldn't connect to the router. I had to reset it to factory settings in order for it to work again.

I told my co-worker what happened and he told me to bring it in and he would look at it. He said everything was just as he set it up when I gave it to him the first time and that it should work fine.

I brought it home and I was able to connect to the laptop (but still can't connect to the desktop) and it didn't ask me for a SSID or a password and it simply says "unsecured". I don't have the CD, I'm not sure if he gave it back to me or not but I can't find it. I've tried putting in the basic IP address (192.168.1.1) but it only takes me to my modem setup, not the router. I've also tried the instructions here from Netgear but every time I go to either http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com it takes me straight back to the help home page, with no where to log in for router access.

I'm not comfortable leaving this unsecured but I tried everything I know. Sorry for writing a book LOL I just wanted to make sure I included all the details.

    Thanks for the help!

Go into your Internet Browser and type in 192.168.1.1 (no "www" or ".com").

The router setup screen should come up. Your friend likely set up a router access password - it may or may not be the same as your wireless log-in password. If he/she did not, either leave the password screen blank or try "admin". Browse through the screens until you find the tab marked "security" (or something sililar). If you have a newer PC, the "WPA" password option is stronger. On older (3+ years old) PCs or Wi-Fi adapters, you may have to use the "WEP" password option.

If this is too confusing, here's a "Plan B":

Go to www.netgear.com and click on the option for support and downloads. You may be able to download a copy of the router setup software and it will guide you through the process.

If using the software setup option it's a good idea to reset the router to default settings before starting. Leaving the router plugged in, find the reset button near the Ethernet ports on the back (you'll have to use the end of a paperclip to push it). Push it in and hold it down for about 30 seconds until all the lights on the front turn off then back on. At this point, the router is set to factory defaults, unsecured mode.

    Hope these tips help. :)

Dy, on one of the machines connected to the wireless, do ipconfig and post the default gateway, thats likely to be a slighty different address as 192.168.1.1 seems to take you to your modems page instead of the netgear. We will start off with that.

    Thanks for the tips. :)

Cman, the laptop is the only thing connected to the internet right now. The desktop never gets past "acquiring network address" unless it's directly connected to the modem. When I do ipconfig on the laptop the default gateway is 192.168.1.1 :/
