Hey I am running XP and have a question about task manager...Some programs are Unendable through it. HOW do you force these things to actually quit??? End process or End Process tree WILL shut them down, but they will instantly reappear. This has happenned to me numerous times, most recently with Internet Explorer. Note: It does not show up in the applications window, just the processes. Thanks for your help.

Obviously, you need to find out why this program keeps starting. Have you tried to find in control panel->administratrative tools->services. Or you could run msconfig.exe.

    You could run HijackThis

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155

and post the log here for experts to look at.

You could try this tool at Major Geeks:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Autoruns_d4686.html

From the product description: "Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP."

Does it run when you boot up in safe mode? It might also be a malware problem, so while in safe mode, do run spyware and antivirus scans.

Which processes are the ones that will not end?

  6. rmyere

Internet explorer itself will not end......or actually, it will end, but then will start itself right back up. While I would like to know how to stop this, I was also asking the more general question of is there a way to end programs in general that do this???? And also there are sometimes programs that do not end AT ALL....I don't have any examples of this right now, cause I don't want to start ending programs, but is there some way to stop this????

    From the HijackThis log:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CDROM TRANS FLAG SPAM] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\UserSafeCdromTrans\Thunk Surf.exe

O4 entries are for autoloading programs. Does anyone know anything about this UserSafeCdromTrans or surf.exe?

rmeyere, did you run (with latest updates) antivirus and spyware scans in safe mode?

Only most recently about a month ago....I will go through and do that again.
