    Hi ..
new here. I put a new music cd in my dvd drive, bought at the store and my computer shut down. I looked at the back of the cd and in fine print, it calls the video part of the music cd something like enhanced cd or enhanced video. Sony had a disclaimer for the technology in very small print. The computer booted back up, but when I put in a music cd after that, the computer shut down and finally broke. There is an error on the disk using chkdisk. The internet connection is damaged. It took ages to get back into the c drive. I wondered, can a brand new cd from the store carry any kind of a virus? Do you think all of this is related to a software incompatibility? In the Events log, it had disk / disk / disk / disk / disk 5 times all with the red shield by it. For a long time, I couldn't get the comp to recognize the c-drive at all. Now it can see the c-drive, but the main user id has lost all the emails and bookmarks and things. The internet connection is gone. Any thoughts on any of this would be welcome.

    Hi

Its not inconcievable that a store bought CD could have a virus on it, however its very unlikely as all users of that CD would be reporting the same issue as you and the news agencies and websites/forums woudl pick this up very quickly.

Could be a very random unique coincidence in the crash or as you said if and IIRC many enhanced Cds have some extra player that needs installing before you play the content, that this caused an incompatability with a driver of yours.

What Windows version you using and can you access System Restore as that may help, may not bring back many documents, but may get your internet working.

    Hi Halo,

Whether related or not, I've had permissions problems galor on my hard drive which seem to have appeared around the same time as the cd problem, but not exactly the same time and I think they could have a different source. The cd player crashes if I try to play music, but I believe it can still be used for the xp cd. The permissions problems seem to be a separate problem. I can't use my admin account to access non-admin accounts. The permissions problems started up around the time the computer went into an endless boot loop. None of the antivirus / antimalware scans I've done have turned up anything concrete, although my c-drive has gone missing twice and I had to tease it back out each time using a boot cd. I expect there's either a rootkit at the base somewhere, since I got the message that the mbr should not be fixed or the computer may no longer work, or the system is badly corrupted. System restore is always my first choice of solutions and it didn't help this time.

I decided to buy a new harddrive and see if I can figure out a way to remove both the HPA and the DCO before I install the operating system. What I don't know is if removing the HPA and DCO will leave the harddrive useless, or if they can be removed safely and cheaply somehow, without causing problems for using the harddrive in a normal way after that. Do you have any advice about this? I found some information online which indicates that the size of the HPA can be changed, so I assume it can probably be changed to 0, but I don't know enough about it.

    Thanks.
