Erased too much trying to get rid of popups?

I followed your instructions and FINALLY got rid of all the pop ups I had. But while I was trying to get rid of them, maybe before I came here for help, I think I erased more than I should have.

When I start up my PC a black box pops up that says "C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpvit.exe" at the top. It just sits there. When I hit the "X" in the upper right corner it goes away after asking me if I am sure I want to exit it. Then the PC goes through the rest of its booting up. I don't have any other problems until I try to make a back up to a CD, or try to copy a CD. I don't know if these two are related. When I try to write to a CD with CD Writer, I get the message "There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable."

    I have :

    Hi Rebecca,

Does the black box you get on startup say anything else, maybe details or something, is it a windows box?

Also, were you able to copy or back-up CD's after you installed SP2?

    Steve

The black box is a Windows box, I suppose. It looks like the one that comes up (or used to come up) when you used dos from Windows. The C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpvit.exe
is on the top border of the box. Where a toolbar would be if there was a toolbar.

Do you think SP2 caused the problem? I think installed SP2 after the problem started and it didn't help. But I could be confused. The black box may or may not be related to the CD writing problem. The CD writing problem is what worries me because I have a small business and can't back up my business files.

Yeah, we aren't that far from each other, I'm right outside Knoxville and work up in the Tri-cities some.

I cannot locate that file name C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpvit.exe. Maybe another member can come up with something on it. Does the box come up if you start in safe mode?

Also, check in DEVICE MANAGER. Start, Settings, Control Panel, System icon, Hardware tab, and click the Device Manager button. See if there is a Exclamation Mark ( ! ) anywhere.

The error message you are getting with copying CD's There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable.

See if this is included with the message, Error: Can not complete the CD writing wizard.

Yes, the message, "Cannot complete the CD writing wizard" is part of the error message. I don't know if the black box comes up in safe mode. I will try it and check for exclamation points now.

I just checked for exclamation points and didn't see any. I will have to find my notes for starting in safe mode.

    Rebecca,

Have a look at the link below, scroll down until you see Error: Can not complete the CD writing wizard.See if that might be the problem.
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q324129

    SAFE MODE
    1. Start Windows, or if it is running, shut Windows down, and then turn off the computer.
    2. Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). What is displayed depends on the BIOS manufacturer. Some computers display a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS, while others may not display any indication that this process is happening.
    3. As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    4. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the Safe mode menu item, and then press Enter.

    Hey Rebecca,

Go back to Device Manager like you did before, click on the plus sign ( + ) to expand the views and locate the Drive you are having trouble with.

Left-click on the name to highlight it and then go down and click Remove. It's OK, windows will locate and reinstall it when you restart your computer.

Restart of course, and try the CD writer now.

    Rebecca,

Also, in the post above you mention it suggesting there might be a problem with the driver. What did it say exactly and at what stage did you see this.

Check the manufacturers web site for updated drivers.

I don't know. Whatever came with the darn thing! How can I find out?

Also, somewhere in my searches through the PC I saw a button for update driver. I hit the button and then it said that I have the latest driver. The reason that I thought it might be the driver was in the "Troubleshoot Issues" page you sent me to it mentioned that. Hey, what do I know? I was a main frame person many years ago.

What program comes up when you back-up or write to a CD, what process do you use?

To make a back up, I start in Quick Books under File on the toolbar is back up. When I hit that a box pops up that says "Quick Books Backup." I hit the "OK" button and I get a little box that says "Your file has been successfully backed up." Then a little ballon pops up at the right bottom of the screen and says "You have files waiting to be written to CD." I click on that and it looks like a Microsoft box pops up. I highlight the file and click on "Write these files to CD. The CD writing wizard pops up and the next thing I know I am getting the error box saying "Cannot complete the CD writing wizard. There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable." And it asks if I want to save the files to try again later or eject the disc and try another or delete the files that are waiting to be written.

    OK.

    1. Open My Computer, right-click on the CD Drive icon, and then click Properties.

    2. Click the Recording tab to display the settings.

    3. Check and make sure the Enable CD recording on this drive box is checked.

    Rebecca,

Try this to make sure your system files are OK.

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in: sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

When finished restart your computer and see if the "C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpvit.exe" box pops up again.

Steve, I did this and after a little while I was prompted, "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now." So I put the CD in the drive (not the CD writer drive that I have been having trouble with, the other read only drive.) Then it gave me a message that the version of Windows on the PC didn't match the version on the CD. It repeated this several times and finally said the scan was complete and ended. I don't know why I would have the wrong version of Windows. I bought the PC with the software already installed. With the PC I got a stack of CD's. The one I put into the drive says, "For distribution only with a new PC." And the CD itself says, "Microsoft Windows XP Professional." There is a sticker on the pack that says, "Includes Service Pack 1."

Is this the error message you were getting, except for XP.

The CD you provided is the wrong CD.
Please insert the Windows 2000 <version> CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

The link below is for Windows 2000 but should work for XP.

That took a whole lot longer for me to do than it took you to write it. I finally got through it, I think. I kept getting the "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now" message, but if I clicked "retry" twice it went away without saying that I had the wrong CD in the drive. So I guess that worked. But the black box still came up when I restarted and I still can't write a CD.

  23. Matacumbie

    Matacumbie Rocky Top

Have you changed the brand or kind of CD's you usually use, or are you still using the ones that worked before?

Also. Is this sort of the chain of events and where does the black box you get on startup fall in?

    1. Unable to back-up write to cd's.

    2. Removed spyware.

    3. Installed sp2.

    Steve

  24. Rebecca

    Rebecca Private First Class

I am still using the same box of CD's that I have always used. I am not sure what the sequence of events is. Maybe:

    1. Removed spyware.

    2. Black box.

    3. Unable to write to CD's.

    4. Installed SP2.

    But I am not sure.

Rebecca .... do me a favour and try and find that file C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpvit.exe and right click on it and choose properties, what info I'm after is, is that file one of Microsofts... seems weird that doing a search on the net that file doesnt popup and searching my PC I dont have it.

Maybe Steve you could see if its on your PC at all?

You can uncheck Wcpsvit for sure and see if you still get the pop-up. You will need to restart.

I want to wait and see about the removal / uninstaller from Purity Scan, not sure about it. There are some pretty detailed manual removal instructions but let's wait and see what Halo thinks.

Unchecked, restarted and got this message:

You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.
Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.

I found the file and clicked on properties, but I don't know what will help you.

I also downloaded and tried the CD burning application. It doesn't seem to recognize the QuickBooks file type (.QBB) as something I might want to burn. At least it doesn't show it when I am browsing trying to find the file.

No the properties info, we dont need now as we now know after correcting the file name, what that file is.

Funny enough Steve, Symantec's site points to that uninstaller for first thing to try... what I would do its to hit Crtl-Alt-Del and look for that file in the processes list and end it, then run uninstaller ( may also need to turn off System Restore )

full instructions for removal http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/PurityScan.html but as you have followed the removal instructions in the spyware part of the forum, I'd guess that most of it should be removed now and may just only have the file left to delete and its run command in the registry.

easy option for removing something from the run part if the registry is to download & install this ( regcleaner ) http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html once run click Startup List and put a tick next to Wcpsvit > remove selected, this will stop XP from trying to run that file at bootup.

I think the wcpsvit black box is gone! Now if I could just make a back up. For awhile I was having a hard drive death every year and losing lots of stuff I thought was important. Now that I have a business, I am more worried about not having an occasional backup.

    Hi Rebecca

    Check this for me....

Start > Run type services.msc > OK > find and doubleclick IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service

Under service status click Start ( also check to see if under Startup Type its set to Automatic ) and try to burn a cd.

I notice you have Nero installed, was this installed reciently?

  38. Rebecca

    Rebecca Private First Class

Startup type is Automatic, I clicked Start - no CD.

A guy installed the Nero Saturday night. I shouldn't have mentioned that I was having trouble, because you know how men are - he had to sit down and dink around. He said he wrote to a CD with the Nero after he installed it, but my read drive won't read it and I haven't been able to write with it, so I think he just couldn't admit that he didn't fix everything.

    Rebecca,

I did some searching and came across a couple of issues with backing up Quickbook files. The error messages were not the same as yours but did cause problems.

PopupStopper was a program that caused problems and needed to be disabled to perform the backup. The error was usually "Invalid Drive" but it might be something to double-check.

If you have any pop-up or ad blocking software installed try disabling it and see if that works. You may have some after going thru the Spyware tutorial.

I tried all kinds of things trying to get rid of the popups. I will try to figure out what I did and turn them off. I know I already turned some off, because they weren't stopping what I had anyway. But I might have left something turned on. I will see what I can find.

    Rebecca,

Try a couple of different cd's just to make sure we are not using bad ones.

If that doesn't work go back and turn off XPs burning capabilty ( Imapi service to disabled ) and see if Nero will just 1-1 copy or backup a CD.

    Steve

  43. Rebecca

    Rebecca Private First Class

Nope, that didn't work either. Does that mean it's a hardware problem? I assumed since I had been erasing stuff that I caused the problem.

What errors did Nero give you?

also to narrow down a hardware fault can you borrow a CDRW from someone to test if it is an actual dead CDRW?

  45. Rebecca

    Rebecca Private First Class

Nero didn't give me any errors. It actually pretended to have written the music to the CD. I took the CD from the CD Writer drive and put it in the other drive and - nothing. I put the original back in the drive and it plays. I know one guy who might bring another drive and compare, but he is my son's friend, 19 years old, and a PAIN in the neck. He thinks he knows everything and argues with me when I tell him something. You guys know a lot more than he does, and you haven't talked to me like I am retarded yet! (How do you keep patience like that?)

So it even got to the end and said disk finished? ( not that I dont believe you or anything ) and this was a straight one to one copy using Neros copy entire disk option?

If you open up the burned cd by right click cd drive icon and select open does it show and data files?

We will have a better idea when a known working CDRW is installed.. as it may just be the burning laser thats failed and the read laser thats ok.

    --------------------

As to your question on patience.... well we all had to start somewhere, the geniuses I first and still do hang around with on the net and in work, taught me alot and showed me great patience as well so it rubs off, plus i'm a naturally patient person unless I'm buying someting new then I want it NOW!!! ;)

The worse thing is that we are not sitting infront of say your PC to try and fault find and sadly have to just go step by step in narrowing a problem down... sometimes we can hit the answer in a few steps sometimes not, its all in the details the more info you can give like what steps you took etc help thats why we all ask many questions and you have come to a great place where you can learn alot about the workings of your PC and Software, never feel there is a question you cannot ask.. fire away and someone will help and thats the beauty of forums you have access to a wide variety of knowledge.

I put Ray Charles in the CD Writer drive and clicked on "open." (I think that's what you meant.) It listed a bunch of stuff, so it must be reading. Wait a minute, I'll go get one of my earlier back ups and see if it recognizes it...

Okay, the last back up I made successfully opend fine in the writer drive. When I was trying to write using Nero, I tried to copy just one file and it didn't seem like anything was happening. So I tried the copy everything and it seemed to think it was doing something. I don't specifically remember what it said to me, so I will try it again with another new CD.

    Rebecca

  48. Rebecca

    Rebecca Private First Class

Okay, again. I put Ray into the read drive and open Nero. I clicked copy entire disk. First Nero says:
    "Burn analyzing CD"
    "The CD is copyrighted"
    "Burn process started"
Then a "burn process status bar" starts at zero per cent and snakes up to one hundred per cent. Then it says:
    "Burn process completed successfully."

So I tried clicking on the write CD icon and open. It told me to put a CD in the drive. So I took the CD (that was supposed to have a copy of Ray on it) out of the write drive and put it into the read drive and asked it to open. Once again it told me to put a CD in the drive. So what you said - the read laser is ok, but the write one isn't? How much does that cost?
