Time I think to try another CDRW just to see if it is yours thats faulty, if it works then we know its hardware.. if not then we have a better idea that its a software issue.

    CD RW Won't Write Data

I found the old thread and thought it would be a place to start. I didn't come back with the resolution at that time because it took awhile. I finally bought a new CD-RW drive and installed it. There was some master-slave stuff that I wasn't sure of. The guy I bought the PC from came by and said that they always set it up one way which was opposite from what you guys said. STILL had the same problems no matter which way I jumpered those wires. I don't know which way I left them.. I think I finally (don't remember exactly) disabled the read-only drive and made a few back ups. I thought the problem was solved (sort of) but I had so much trouble that I haven't made back ups like I should have. Anyway with all the warnings about a dummy like me using the Office 2007 Beta 2, I thought I should make a good back up of my business files. No can do! When I go into "My Computer" the drive shows up as "CD-RW" (E:)" until I put a blank disc in. Then it shows up as "CD Drive (E:)" I am a little confused about what program to use to write to it, so I tried to drag and drop a file. It gave the message "E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect funtion." I tried to run the Nero, and got the "E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect funtion." I am going through this thread trying to find something, but I thought I would ask about it switching from RW to R in My Computer when I pput a blank disc in. Is that weird?

Dont think anyone is calling you a dummy Rebecca, and IF my post in your other thread about Windows Vista Beta and Office 2007 beta implied that then I'm sorry it was not ment that way, its just betas are unfinished products and can and will fall over and crash or cause many weird and wonderfull problems then most blame the software, its still test software and far from finished so will have bugs, most of which are not fixable until a newer beta build is released. Office 2007 brings with it a new issue of as you now know the .docx .xlsx etc file formats which are not compatible with other versions of Office, so does cause an issue if you were to send one of those to a client or company to open, they cannot unless they install the Office 2007 Compatability update for Office XP/2003.

As to your CD issue, now that this is a new CDRW then that should have removed your problem, SO I would be now thinking software is the issue and to that a few thoughts.

    1. When you say drag and drop, are you dragging files onto the CDRW Icon? and then you gain the E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect funtion.

Options for this are as to utilise drag n drop on a CD you need packet writing software like Nero InCD or Roxio Drag to Disk installed, then using those softweres format option to format the CDRW or CDR first before drag n drop is an option, check to see if you have Nero InCD installed, if so run it and format the CDRW, then try again.

    2. As you have Nero try this form of copying, mainly to test that the drive will copy ok, use a CDRW ( best as you can wipe the CD at later date ) goto Start > Prpgrams > Nero and choose Nero Express, and make sure your CDRW drive is chosen in the drop down list, then choose Data > Data Disk > then either drag n drop your files into the open box or choose Add and browse for them ( I prefer to drag and drop them in ) once you have a few files in their to test with or actually choose the files your wanting to backup anyway then click Next > Burn

    3. You could also try this as XP has a limited form of drag and drop copying built in, goto My Computer and right click your CDRW drive and choose Properties > click Recording and Enable CD Recording for this Drive > Apply and try again.

Note: above XP burning option may not work if you have tweaked the services list and more so IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service to disabled.

Did it burn the files ok, with any of these methods?

Oh, no, Halo! I'm sorry. It wasn't you. You are wonderfully helpful. It was the Microsoft Discussion Group. They told me that I should get rid of the Beta and then they wouldn't even answer me any more. No help at all for the problem I was having. It made me a little hesitant to ask here, but you were all so nice and helpful before that I tried it again and once again you were all helpful. It is probably correct that I shouldn't have downloaded the Beta stuff, but I thought Microsoft was asking for regular people to give it a try. I know it had already been through a lot of actual Beta testing and I thought they felt it was stable enough for us. And I thought they were probably wanting to get a little buzz of anticipation going with the public.

Anyway - I did try just drag and drop to the icon at My Computer. I checked the services, I think you told me to do that last time I was trying to get it fixed. Right now it says it is Automatic and Started.

In my start start menu, I have Nero Toolkit, Nero - Burning ROM, Nero Cover Designer, Nero Express, Nero Wave Editor, and Nero Media Player. At Nero Express, the only drop down is "Image Recorder (CD - R/RW)" It says, "What would you like to burn?" I picked Data > Data Disk. The next screen says "Disc Content Add data to your disc." I dragged and dropped the file there. Then clicked "Next." Then "Burn." I get a box that says "Burning process, please wait." But nothing seems to be happening and immediately a box pops up on top of the Nero box. (It looks like a regular Microsoft box, not Nero.) It says, "Save in" and has "My Documents in the drop down. And at the bottom the default file name is "Image." And the default file type is "Nero image files (.nrg)" What am I supposed to do here?

Printer jammed again - gotta go reboot. SIGH!

Ah what do they know on the Discussion Groups, most want to be on the actual tech beta newsgroups, so try and act big and put people down, while if they were any good they would have answered your question over being arsey!!!

Yes Microsoft want people to test that Beta, but it comes with some cavets of warnings as to not install on a production critical PC ( ie work or only home PC ) as its not finished and in the slim event it may also corrupt data.

I installed Office 2003 from scratch again, then custom installed Office 2007 into its own folder in Program files and names Office 2007, this way it keeps the main files from both Office version separate, Outlook 2007 will overwrite Outlook XP/2003 and this is by design, but you can if happy with Outlook 2003 untick in the custom install of Office 2007 Outlook and not install that component.

BUT back to your burning issue, ok so in the dropdown box the only thing showing is Image Recorder and no reference to say G: LITEON DVD ( subsitute your CDRW burners name and drive letter for mine ) in the pic below?

well I suspect this issue is the cause, you may not have the errors, but it is a main casue of drives not being seen by software.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/EN-US/ ( there is guided help to assist with this is your not happy editing the registry on that page, which automated the job for you, but if choosing the manual way do right click and export the key that your about to delete in this folder its the folder highlighted in grey and you'll note the Upper and Lower filters in the right hand box, those are you ones you delete )

I would also if your more likely to use Nero over XPs built in Copy Software to now Stop and set Disabled to the startup type to IMAPI, Uninstall Nero ( hopefully you have the original software still to re-install and follow the above and delete the upper and lower filters, then re-install Nero and test again with Nero Express.

I had a class and it ran over, so I will have to work on this tomorrow. I actually prefer NOT to use the Nero. A "friend" downloaded it when I was having trouble with it before. So I don't have an install disc. Actually, I don't know if I prefer not to or not, since I don't think I ever got it to work! Anyway, it's late and Iwill be back tomorrow. Thanks for all your help and kind words. My drive is also a LITEON, but I will think about it tomorrow.
